Three Societies Meeting - Edmonton 2016

Three Societies Meeting - Edmonton 2016 The Three Society Meeting brings together three organizations dedicated to the study history of scie The theme of the meeting is ‘Transitions’.

The Three Society Meeting is held every four years and brings together three organizations dedicated to the study history of science, technology, and medicine: the British Society for the History of Science, Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science, and the History of Science Society. Previous successful meetings were in Philadelphia (2012), Oxford (2008), Halifax, Nova Scotia (2

004), St Louis (2000), Edinburgh (1996), Toronto (1992), and Manchester (1988). The Eighth Joint Meeting of the BSHS, CSHPS, and the HSS will take place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada 22-25 June 2016. The conference will take place at the University of Alberta. Founded in 1905, U of A is located in Edmonton, Canada’s most northern major city. U of A has 37,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 faculty and academic staff. Accommodation will be available on campus and near campus. June is an ideal time for this conference, when you will be able to experience the abundant green space on campus at its best with average daily temperatures of 20C and almost 17 hours of daylight. The Light Rail Transit (LRT) station located at the heart of the campus provides quick and easy transportation across the river to downtown dining, shopping, arts, and entertainment venues. The University of Alberta is also located a short 20 minute walk from historic Whyte Avenue with its many restaurants and bars, coffee shops, and boutique stores. West Edmonton Mall, a world famous shopping and entertainment complex located in the west end of the city is also easily accessible via transit from the University of Alberta.

We now have a video of Erika Dyck's plenary talk up on our website. If you weren't able to make the conference or you want to revisit her fascinating discussion of eugenics in late twentieth century Canada, give it a watch: https://uofa.ualberta.ca/arts/research/3-societies-meeting

This has been a great conference. It’s been such a pleasure to meet old friends, new friends, hear great papers, and enjoy thinking about a variety of important issues in history of science, medicine and technology.

I want to thank the three Societies for supporting and promoting this conference. It couldn’t happen without the full support of Greg Raddick and his executive in the BSHS, Janet Browne and her executive in HSS, and Ernie Hamm (after June 1, me before June 1) and our executive in CSHPS. All three provided members of the program committee and supported graduate student travel to the conference. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this conference such a success.

I hope to see many of you at future conferences. All three societies have annual meetings:
HSS is meeting November 3-6, 2016 in Atlanta (the 2017 meeting is in Toronto)
CHSPS is meeting May 27-29, 2017 in Toronto
BSHS is meeting July 6-9, 2017

And do think about coming to the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology/Division History of Science and Technology in Rio di Janerio, 23-29 July, 2017.

And by the way, the mammals you’ve been seeing around campus are white-tailed prairie hares (sometimes called jackrabbits, although they are actually hares). They probably ensure that the urban population of coyotes stays well-fed!

Safe travels and all the best,
Lesley

Good morning everyone! A reminder that today we are having the women historians' lunch at 12:30 at the Faculty Club. It sounds like many of you will be meeting in the Galleria at 12:30 to walk over there (it only takes 5-10 minutes). Remember to sign up if you haven't done so already via https://womenhistorians.eventbrite.ca/. Also, we're having a tour of the Scott Library at 12:30! Meet at the registration desks in the Galleria for the tour. Our keynote for the day is about historical replications brought to you by Lawrence Principe and it will be held in the same room as yesterday (CCIS 1-440). It runs from 4 PM to 5:30 PM. Then the day's reception will take place at the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), which is downtown and starts at 6:00 PM. We encourage delegates to use the Light Rail Transit (LRT) to get there. It's a mere 10 minute ride to get there. Anyone who has signed up for the AGA reception should have a transit ticket stapled to the back of the drink ticket! We'll also be having guided tours from the Galleria (where registration is) to get to the AGA, starting at 5:30 with the last guide leaving at 6:00. Hope to see you all throughout the day! Have an excellent day 2.

Would you like to meet up with other women historians of science? To share experiences of academic life in Canada, Britain and the US? To consider whether there are things our respective societies could do to support women at all stages of their careers? If you’d like to meet and chat, come along to...
