The Child Development Lab at MacEwan University

The Child Development Lab at MacEwan University Studying how children communicate with the world. We are interested in studying how children communicate with the world around them.

We focus on how children understand the sounds that make up music and language, and how their listening skills and experience affect other abilities, such as problem solving or communicating with others. To study how children’s listening skills develop, we work with normal hearing children as well as with children with hearing loss. We are also interested in how different learning experiences—such

as music and dance training, as well as cultural experience—affect children’s development . By understanding how children develop skills through music and language, we can better help them reach their goals through more fulfilling learning experiences and greater involvement in social and cultural activities.

New study from our colleagues in the Speech Language Pathology Assistant program at MacEwan University: Do you have a child between the age of 3-10 years with English as the home language? Do you notice that they have at least 1 speech sound that is different from the adult pronunciation? If so, this could be a fun study for you and your child. See details below.

New Study! Parents' singing is an important part of everyday caregiving and play in the early years.

We are interested to learn about the features of parents' singing that children (3 to 5 years old) find memorable.

We will need your singing samples (mom and dad) for a game-like task in which your child will listen and identify the singer of the play song.

As a token of our appreciation, your child will receive a $15 gift card to Amazon, Indigo Books, or GameStop.

New study: Do you wonder how young children perceive emotions? We are looking for children ages 3 to 6 years to participate in a virtual study. In a game-like task, children will listen to speech samples and judge the emotion of a talker by selecting among emotion faces. The study can be completed within 30 minutes and virtual appointments will be scheduled at your convenience. Children will receive a $10 gift card to Indigo Bookstore, EB Games, or Amazon as a token of our appreciation. Thank you for your interest in our research and we look forward to hearing from you!

Thoughts from a 4-year-old artist and learner with Early Learning at MacEwan

Sand is usually in the playground, but here it’s on the floor. I got to make two sculptures in the sand. It was awesome. I used pipe cleaners and glitter and rainbow colours.

This was a fun day. I want to do this again at home, but I don’t think I have the right materials. When I go home I’m going to tell my mom about this.

– Sam, age 4, artist and mighty learner with Early Learning at MacEwan (ELM)

Montreal-based artists Meredith Carruthers and Susannah Wesley led a workshop for children from ELM to create plaster sculptures that are part of their installation for CHILDISH.

CHILDISH is the latest exhibition at the John and Maggie Mitchell Art Gallery in Allard Hall, running until December 8.
