Hey Music Lovers! An important message from our Department Chair, Ray Baril:

The Winter term is the very rich with music performances by our named ensembles and by our students. Over the next 13 weeks the Department of Music will present 66 evenings of music that showcase the diversity of our program, and the high level of performance artistry, compositional innovation and creativity that has made MacEwan Music a leader in our industry.

First on the agenda is the Showcase Band & Country/Roots Ensemble concert this Saturday evening, January 11 at 7:30 pm. Under the direction Chris Andrew and Kim Lesaca respectively, these two groups have already performed at various functions throughout the fall term and will now present their first feature concert of the year. In the words of the directors:

Consisting of vocalists and rhythm section players, the Showcase Band is a dynamic group designed to replicate the professional sound of ensembles in the world of music. The repertoire is curated from a broad spectrum of music ranging from rock, neo-soul, soul, funk and pop.

In addition, MacEwan University's Country & Roots Ensemble, this ensemble will be performing music by The Chicks, Cody Johnson, Tyler Childers, John Mayer, and other country and roots music from our favourite artists.

Here's a message from Music Dept. Chair Ray Baril:

Hello to all,

I am passing along an invitation I received regarding strategy development in Alberta’s music industry:

What? West Anthem and Alberta Music, funded by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Status of Women in the Government of Alberta, are developing music city strategies for Edmonton and Calgary, and a toolkit for smaller jurisdictions. They’ve looked at existing strategies, done secondary research and hosted in-depth conversations. Now they need broader feedback to ensure the strategies and toolkit are effective.

Who? They want to hear from folks (18yrs+) previously or currently working in a role within Alberta’s music industry (they accept a wide variety of roles!).

Why? With these strategies and toolkit, government, regulatory, and funding bodies can make decisions based on the real needs of music industry members and organizations while music businesses and individuals can advocate together for greater impact.

How? Take part in a brief 17-question survey. And you get a chance to enter to win one of several prizes! They want to hear what you have to say about the music industry!

Want to know more about the project? Check out our webpage for updates:
https://www.westanthem.com/musiccitystrategies/

Best wishes,

Raymond

Who? We want to hear from folks (18yrs+) previously or currently employed in a role within Alberta’s music industry. We are hoping to receive a minimum of 200 responses to the survey, but we are aiming for more! The survey will be open until early September 2023. What? West Anthem and Alberta Musi...

“It was never a conscious decision to lead the band for that length of time,” said Baril. “I was asked to take on the role in 1986 by Tommy Banks when he was the chair of the music department. It was an opportunity that I was very nervous about taking on, but it was the opportunity that define...
