University of Alberta Open Styles Dance Club We aim to give dancers an opportunity to express their art and promote hip-hop dance as a physical activity in a friendly and welcoming environment.

The U of A Open Styles Dance Club exists at the University of Alberta for the purpose of reaching out to the community, educating about hip-hop culture, and promoting hip-hop dance as physical activity in a friendly and welcoming environment. We offer weekly classes on break dancing and hip hop choreography open to all University students.

“What’s up, party people!! My name is Sofia F. (she/her), 20 years old, and I’m a 3rd year Bachelor of Kinesiology undergraduate student.

I have been an OSD member since September 2024 and I continue to love being a part of it. I’d say joining OSD was a turning point in my life because it made me rediscover my love for dance and it’s such a pivotal stepping stone that helped me get out of a negative headspace (I won’t trauma dump 💀). Joining OSD also allowed me to meet many different people and develop the very important friendships I have now. It’s actually where I met a lot of my closest friends since entering university.

As part of the club’s community, I’m really looking forward to meeting different kinds of people that can help me grow and develop my skills further. And as the event coordinator executive member, I’m looking forward to executing events that will create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone and build a stronger community through my events.

“Hello, my name is Mio (she/her). I’m third year Honors Biochemistry.

OSD is important to me because it has been a place where I built meaningful connections and discovered more about myself. Through OSD, I have made many close friends and found a community that supports and inspires me. It was also where I started dancing, which allowed me to develop my own style, creativity, and sense of self. Dance became more than just a hobby, it became an important part of my identity and a way for me to express who I am. OSD has helped me grow as a person, both through the art of dance and through the relationships I have formed along the way.”
