The Postdoctoral Fellows Association of the University of Alberta (PDFA) and the University of Alberta recently settled on a new Collective Agreement.

The agreement contains a salary increase retroactive to January 1, 2025. As per the new agreement, former postdoc employees (those who were paid out of their supervisor's funds) are entitled to receive this pay increase for the time they were employed from January 1, 2025 to their termination date.

To receive your retroactive pay, postdoc employees who ended their position after January 1, 2025 will need to contact HR Services (Shared Services) within three (3) months of the ratification date (i.e., by December 31, 2025). You may contact the Staff Service Centre at 780-492-8000 or via the Staff Service Centre portal. Please note that if you are reaching out to Shared Services in late December, its offices are closed from December 25, 2025-January 1, 2026 inclusive, so no response will be sent during that period.

If you know of a postdoc employee who was employed at the University of Alberta on January 1, 2025 but has since left, please contact them to provide them with this information regarding their entitlement to retroactive pay. We have also sent emails to all former postdoc employees whose email addresses we have on file, but to ensure everyone gets what they are entitled to we would appreciate your help.

For current postdoc employees, the retroactive pay will be the difference between your current salary and the new minimum salary rate of $45,000 per year or a salary increase of 3%, whichever is greater. Your retroactive pay will be applied to your pay no later than the third pay period following the date of ratification (September 29, 2025). The payroll date has been confirmed to be November 10, 2025.

The PDFA and its four sister campus unions have sent an open letter of concern regarding the decision by the University of Alberta to end its financial support for the six university-affiliated childcare centres. These centres provide guaranteed spots to postdocs, students, staff, and faculty, as well as research and clinical observation opportunities for the campus community.

You can read our open letter and a fact sheet on the benefits of these centres on the PDFA website:
