From the classroom to the negotiation table! This week Dentons ( ) hosted a negotiation competition for our 1L class. For many students, this was their first opportunity to bring their knowledge from the classroom to a practical setting. Students negotiated in front of a panel of judges from different industries, as well as practicing lawyers from Dentons. 

Thank you to Dentons for hosting us, especially Alberta Director of Talent, Elizabeth Harding! Congratulations to the winners Samantha Kiezik and Julnar Jaber and to the runners up, Carson Schultz and Sean Pavzner!

Last week, the Faculty of Law was lucky to send Alexandra Bakir, Calum Ward, and Alex Alliston to attend the Prisme Conference in Ottawa. The conference discussed current issues facing 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in the legal profession and the advancement of 2SLGBTQ+ rights, both in Canada and around the world.

The attendees were able to connect with other OUTLaw student groups and various firms from across the country, hear from lawyers from around the world, including Australia, Ireland, and England, about their experiences being part of the legal and 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and expand their knowledge about how laws and progress that are made in Canada can positively and negatively impact the various legal systems in the Caribbean.

“The sense of community we felt was so heartwarming, and we have made lasting connections and friendships. We each had a wonderful time and learnt so much,” says Calum.

Each of them brings a diversity of expertise in many areas of research, including tech contracts, anti-corruption, and energy law.

The Law Spring Reception, hosted by our dedicated Law Alumni and Friends is always one of our favourite evenings, and this year was no exception!

We are so grateful to our alumni, who constantly reaffirm their commitment to supporting the faculty. When this years Cecilia Johnstone Equality Award winner, Neha Tadepalli graduates this spring, she’ll take with her the memories of the kind words and support from her peers — some of whom have become lifelong friends — professors, her moot partners and other members of the Faculty of Law community. It’s thanks to this community that she has strengthened her advocacy skills, learned about the practice of law and has had the chance to explore Edmonton’s scenic River Valley throughout every season.
