Mike Petryk School of Dentistry alumnus Dr. Stephen Allred proves you don't have to choose between a health-care career and your creative passions. Since graduating in 2015, Stephen has built a fulfilling dental practice while actively writing and starring in award-winning theatre productions. He finds that dentistry and drama naturally complement each other, bringing both scientific precision and artistic joy to his life.

Congratulations to Drs. Camila Pacheco-Pereira (U of A investigator) and Matheus Oliveira (external investigator from the University of Campinas, Brazil) on receiving the MITACS Globalink Research Award for the evaluation of artificial intelligence in the identification and classification of periodontal bone loss.

Bringing two oral and maxillofacial radiology communities together, this partnership will open doors to new collaborations between our universities in imaging and augmented intelligence tools approved for clinical practice.

Alice Villar (PhD student from UNICAMP) will join us, strengthening the connection between the two teams and helping create new opportunities for shared projects and learning.

Congratulations to Julie Tran, ‘27 MSc in orthodontics. She won Best Poster in this year’s Canadian Association of Orthodontists poster competition. Her work focused on characterizing clinical signs and techniques for cutting back baby teeth when their definitive replacement teeth are naturally missing. This is done to facilitate natural space closure.

Contributors included Xu Xu, a fellow U of A MSc student, and Julia Naoumova, a faculty member of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. She is supervised by Dr. Carlos Flores-Mir (U of A). The poster is titled ‘Clinical indications and techniques for hemisections of secondary primary molars: A scoping review.’

Making a difference in our community starts with leaders like Cheryl Arntson, RDH. We are proud to celebrate Arntson for becoming a clinical director for the Special Olympics Alberta Healthy Athletes - Special Smiles program. It’s an example of how U of A leaders are making an impact on the community.

At the Special Olympics in Medicine Hat, Arntson, alongside an incredible team of volunteer oral health professionals and students, provided free oral health screenings, hygiene instruction, and fluoride varnish applications to approximately 600 athletes.

We love hearing about patients’ experiences at the Oral Health Clinic, and recently we got this review. We are so proud of our students and team, and will be passing along the feedback. Thank you to all our patients.

“WOW! I’ve been going to the School of Dentistry for a couple of years now, and I’m so grateful for them!

I have an autoimmune disease called Sjögren’s, which means I have very little saliva and, unfortunately, my teeth break easily … so I’m there more often than I’d like to be! I don’t have dental insurance, so having access to excellent dental care at a lower cost means so much to me!

The facility is also incredibly clean, and everyone has been wonderful. From the reception staff to Sharon, who ALWAYS quickly gets me scheduled for both regular appointments and emergency visits, she is always so kind and reassuring! To the amazing, talented students and their supervisors, who are PHENOMENAL! Thank you so much for always taking such good care of me. ❤️

I HIGHLY recommend the School of Dentistry for your dental care!

Just remember, this is a teaching facility, so your appointment may take a little longer than at a regular dental office. However, you’ll walk out feeling very well cared for and knowing you’ve also helped the next generation of dentists learn along the way!"

Recently, the dental assisting program spent the day at the Northwest Dental Exposition 2026 at the Edmonton Convention Centre. Students explored the future of care and attended sessions, including one on how digital dentistry is transforming modern practices.

U of A expertise was also showcased at the Edmonton Dental Assistants Association (EDAA) booth by faculty member Tracey Espetveidt, RDA, who serves as EDAA Oral Health Initiatives Director. We are proud of our students and faculty for representing our community at this fantastic industry event.
