It’s a new academic year, which means you will be seeing some fresh faces in our clinics. As we support our students in their clinical training, we want to thank our patients for being an essential part of their journey. Your trust allows us to guide the next generation of dental professionals while providing you with excellent care.

Partnering with the Metis Nation of Alberta, the student-led Access for All initiative provides free oral health care to the Métis community. This collaboration fosters a safe, welcoming health-care setting for patients while giving students highly valuable, hands-on clinical experience.

During its most recent outreach in Redwater, Alberta, students, preceptors and support staff came together to treat 77 patients across 113 appointments, completing 441 procedures over four days.

A special thank you to everyone who volunteered to make this happen, including 17 students, four preceptors and four support staff. Special thanks to community members: Zohair Badami, RDA, Dr. Jill Bulman, Dr. Maria Czyz, Dr. Suzy Depledge, and Ahmad Maita, RDH. 👏

If you are interested in volunteering a week of your time as a preceptor at a future event, email us at [email protected].

It was great spending time with the newest first-year dentistry students at the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry - University of Alberta.

We had a fantastic turnout as we introduced students to the Alberta Dental Association, what membership means, and the benefits available to student members, including free membership.

Congratulations to graduate students Maryam Shahrokhi Sardoo and Swarna Yerebairapura Math on their election to the executive team of a national student group that is a collaboration between all 10 dental schools in Canada.

Maryam was elected president, while Swarna was elected councillor-at-large of the CADR-NCOHR National Student Research Group (NSRG) Executive. Their appointments highlight the strong leadership and research engagement of University of Alberta trainees at the national level.

The CADR-NCOHR NSRG is a student-led organization dedicated to supporting and advancing students as the next generation of oral health researchers in Canada. Through national initiatives and student-focused programming, the NSRG fosters collaboration, professional development, and a strong network of emerging oral health researchers across the country.

Exceptional mentors build the foundation for our future researchers. Congratulations to Dr. Maryam Sharifzadeh-Amin on receiving the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s (FoMD) Clinical Tier I award and to Dr. Raisa Catunda on receiving the Clinical Tier II award for Excellence in Mentoring Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows.

This is an award that the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry holds in the highest esteem. It is an annual award to recognize outstanding performance in the mentoring of research trainees. They both provide support, encouragement, and challenge trainees to reach their full potential.

Yesterday, faculty members from the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry had the privilege of attending the U of A's AI Day to explore changes to teaching and learning with artificial intelligence. They learned about human-centred AI, practical applications of Gemini tools, and rethinking assessment strategies in higher education. We are excited to bring these perspectives to enhance our programs.

🏆 Congratulations to Dr. Suzy Depledge for being honoured with the W.W. Wood Award for excellence in Dental Education. This award is annually presented by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry to commemorate a winner’s impact while teaching. 🏆

Dr. Depledge has enhanced experiential learning and learner support by designing the school’s first curriculum-embedded advanced elective program for graduating doctor of dental surgery students, and leading the Access for All initiative to support greater social accountability and community impact on the communities we serve.

Here is what one of our patients had to say about the stellar teamwork they experienced during their visit: “My dentistry student and the young lady who assisted him due to her patient cancellation were both so competent and worked excellently as a team. If I had to grade them, they both deserve an A+ for the excellent care and education I received. Both very personable and caring."
