In keeping with the RCMR’s goals for building research capacity to advance Métis-specific research, we are proud to announce the publication of our new booklet, “Determining our Destiny: Then and Now - Métis Education in Alberta”.

This booklet provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the 1990 Métis Education Conference and progress achieved since. Guided by some of the RCMR’s research areas, namely institutional deficit in Métis education, contemporary Métis issues as well as historical research and Métis rights, the “Determining our Destiny” booklet is a quick read which powerfully demonstrates the important role of education as a path to Métis self-determination.

A pdf of the booklet can be found on the RCMR’s publications webpage at https://www.ualberta.ca/en/native-studies/research/rupertsland-centre-for-metis-research/publications.html and paper copies will be available at community events tabled by RCMR.

September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to reflect on all those who are impacted by Indian Residential Schools, including the Métis, First Nations and Inuit Survivors and the children who never returned home. May we keep them in our hearts and minds as we continue to walk the path of reconciliation on Orange Shirt Day, and everyday.

To learn more about Métis People’s experiences at Indian Residential Schools, have a look at volume 3 of the TRC Report:https://www.metisnation.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2025/06/volume_3_metis_english_web.pdf

As well, RCMR held a MÉTIS Talks featuring Tricia Logan discussing Métis Experiences and Histories at Residential Schools. Find the link below for MÉTIS Talks, Métis Experiences and Histories at Residential Schools. Tricia’s presentation begins at 54:15.
