You don’t need perfect English to have something worth saying.

ECHOFORM recently visited our CLB 3 & 4 students, and what began as a guest presentation turned into a powerful conversation about arriving in Canada, building connections, finding your voice, and sharing your story.

It happens! Especially when you're learning English, it can be difficult to catch every word.

You don't have to pretend you understand. Try these simple and polite phrases instead:

"Could you say that again, please?”

“Could you speak a little more slowly, please?”

“Sorry, what was that word?”

These phrases are useful at work, school, appointments, and everyday conversations.

Tip:
In Canada, we often soften requests by using "Could you…” and “please.” Asking someone to repeat themselves is completely normal!

We practise real-life English like this in our English Corner at Solomon College; a friendly space where our newcomer students can build confidence, practise speaking, and use English in everyday situations.

Remember: Asking for help is good communication.

Sometimes, the best ideas start with noticing what students need.

Our Program Coordinators saw something important across our classrooms: students wanted more opportunities to speak, connect, and use English in real conversations..

So, we started something new.

English Corner is now bringing students from the same language levels together across two Solomon College campuses each month, with a fresh topic and plenty of opportunities to talk, listen, share, laugh, and learn from one another. And honestly, these photos say so much more than we could.

This is what learning a language can look like: people coming together, feeling supported, and having a reason to speak. We’re excited to see where English Corner goes next and even more excited to see our students finding their voices!

IT English in action!

This week, our students moved beyond vocabulary and started talking about their real careers.

We explored common IT terms, broke down different IT roles, and practiced how to confidently explain their experience and daily responsibilities.

They also started building their professional portfolios and working on their introductions.

Step by step, they’re finding their professional voice and we love seeing it happen!

That question came directly from our employment students during their first-week needs analysis.

So this week, we made pronunciation part of the classroom! We explored the 'schwa' sound, practiced articulation, and had a lot of fun discovering how small sounds can make a big difference.

The best part? Students supported each other, took risks, and learned together.

That’s more than pronunciation practice: that’s called 'belonging'.

A quick tip for you:
In English, some vowels become a very relaxed “uh” sound when we speak naturally. This is the schwa.

Try saying “about” naturally: the first sound is softer: uh-BOUT, not AH-BOUT.

Small change, more natural rhythm.
