Solomon College has Language Instruction and ESL programs available for those who are new to Canada and are pursuing further education and/or employment. Aligning that with our Employment programs, our instructors encourage students to keep studying with us to complete certificate training; while Solomon works with industry partners to assist students in finding work after graduation. We further offer Diploma programs, such as Hospitality, for those wanting a higher education; whether you are already a Canadian citizen or have permanent residency. Starting the second half of October and all throughout November, our career counsellor will be delivering workshops to our Childcare Worker Program students and IT Service Technician Program students on the following topics:
- Canadian Workplace Culture,
- Work-Life Balance,
- Interview Preparation,
- Communication and Collaboration,
- Provincial Employment Standards Code,
- Provincial Human Rights Code and Commission,
and more. There will be extensive and deep discussions, case studies, scenario roleplays, and other learning activities.

You don’t need perfect English to have something worth saying.

ECHOFORM recently visited our CLB 3 & 4 students, and what began as a guest presentation turned into a powerful conversation about arriving in Canada, building connections, finding your voice, and sharing your story.

It happens! Especially when you're learning English, it can be difficult to catch every word.

You don't have to pretend you understand. Try these simple and polite phrases instead:

"Could you say that again, please?”

“Could you speak a little more slowly, please?”

“Sorry, what was that word?”

These phrases are useful at work, school, appointments, and everyday conversations.

Tip:
In Canada, we often soften requests by using "Could you…” and “please.” Asking someone to repeat themselves is completely normal!

We practise real-life English like this in our English Corner at Solomon College; a friendly space where our newcomer students can build confidence, practise speaking, and use English in everyday situations.

Remember: Asking for help is good communication.

Sometimes, the best ideas start with noticing what students need.

Our Program Coordinators saw something important across our classrooms: students wanted more opportunities to speak, connect, and use English in real conversations..

So, we started something new.

English Corner is now bringing students from the same language levels together across two Solomon College campuses each month, with a fresh topic and plenty of opportunities to talk, listen, share, laugh, and learn from one another. And honestly, these photos say so much more than we could.

This is what learning a language can look like: people coming together, feeling supported, and having a reason to speak. We’re excited to see where English Corner goes next and even more excited to see our students finding their voices!

IT English in action!

This week, our students moved beyond vocabulary and started talking about their real careers.

We explored common IT terms, broke down different IT roles, and practiced how to confidently explain their experience and daily responsibilities.

They also started building their professional portfolios and working on their introductions.

Step by step, they’re finding their professional voice and we love seeing it happen!
