May 5, known as Red Dress Day, is a National Day of Awareness, Remembrance, and Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ peoples (MMIWG2S+). It honours those whose lives have been lost to gendered colonial violence, supports grieving families and communities, and calls for action on the Calls for Justice. Originating from Métis artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project, the day is marked by red dresses displayed in public spaces and people gathering through rallies, ceremonies, and acts of solidarity to raise awareness and advocate for justice.

How you can participate:
• Wear Red: Show your support by wearing red on May 5 and encouraging others to do the same.
• Learn and Reflect: Explore the history and ongoing impact of MMIWG2S and consider ways to advocate for change. Visit the National Calls for Justice to deepen your understanding and learn how you can take action.
• Join an Event: Kiipitakyoyis is supporting two events on May 5 in Calgary (scroll down for more information) and others are being held across the country.

Happy 60th Birthday, UCalgary!

Sixty years ago today, Canada’s youngest university was born. In the six decades since, University of Calgary researchers have unearthed previously unknown dinosaurs, discovered new mysteries of the universe, have made life healthier and safer for Canadians, educated a prime minister and senior astronaut, and served as the catalyst for countless new careers and changed lives.
