Eid Mubarak!

Eid ul-Fitr is the first of the two main festivals in Islam. The holiday falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. One of the most important Islamic celebrations, Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide as it marks the end of the month-long, dawn-to-dusk fasting (sawm) during Ramadan. Hence it is also called Festival of Breaking the Fast.

The holiday is known under various other names in different languages and countries around the world.

Ramadan is considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. In Ramadan, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an, and fast from food and drink during the sunlit hours as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate one of their major holidays called Eid ul-Fitr or the “Festival of the Breaking of the Fast.”

The greeting for someone who is fasting is Ramadan Mubarak, which is more formal, or Ramadan Kareem.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

Two of our Book groups are reading James by Percival Everett:

James is a critically acclaimed novel that reimagines Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the first-person perspective of the enslaved Jim. The story follows Jim’s escape from a planned sale, his perilous journey down the Mississippi River with the young Huck Finn, and his profound quest for freedom. The novel delves into Jim’s intelligence, resilience, and agency, contrasting with Twain’s original portrayal, and uses humour and satire to explore themes of identity, racism, and liberation.

As we begin this month of Hallmark greetings, wine and roses and lots and lots of chocolate, let’s try a little experiment:

Dec 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This is to raise global awareness of their rights and to show that even today, people with a disability are discriminated against, on a daily basis.

Disability is a universal phenomenon. 1 in 7 people lives with some form of disability. 80% of this population is from the developing countries.

1 in 20 is a child under 15, who has a moderate or severe disability.

More than 50% of the people who have a disability cannot afford health care.

The next time you stand up and walk, have a conversation with a loved one without the need for a hearing aid or using sign language, read or write something, or enjoy the sunset, be grateful. There are millions of people around the world who are not able to do these everyday things.

If you’ve never had to take medication for a physical or mental health issue, be grateful. There are millions of people around the world who are not able to live a single day without these.

If we can do nothing else for them, then the least we can do is be accepting of them. They are human beings and deserve the same rights that we claim for ourselves.
