June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day a time to celebrate and honour the cultures, voices, histories and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada.

Here in our region, June 21 also marks the anniversary of the signing of Treaty 8, an important part of the history and ongoing responsibilities connected to this land.

We recently had the privilege of spending the day with students from Father R. Perin School in Janvier.

Our team shared a learning experience focused on land-based knowledge. We explored and studied plants that hold traditional importance to the local Dene people.

This outreach was successfully co-led by one of our own, Ethan Josey. Ethan is a former University Transfer student who has successfully transitioned to the University of Alberta to pursue a degree in Education.

Keyano connects future students with pathways to higher education. We are rooted in Wood Buffalo, built for what's next.

Building essential English skills with newcomers to Canada to strengthen life and work readiness.

Thursday night, we celebrated the graduation of Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program members. The program offers free, part-time English language instruction, funded by Canadian Immigration and Citizenship(IRCC).

Thank you to Keyano College President and CEO Dr. Scott MacPherson, Dr. Coert Erasmus, Dean, School of Business, University Studies, Academic Upgrading, Health & Human Services, Dr. Mark Dolmont, Vice-President Academic & Student Experience, and Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councilman Stu Wigle for attending and welcoming the students into the next chapter in their respective journeys.
