June is National Indigenous History Month — a time to recognize, learn about, and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada.

At Keyano College, we are privileged to be located on Treaty 8 territory, the traditional and contemporary meeting grounds and gathering places of the Denesuline, Cree, and Métis Peoples of this region.

We encourage our students, employees, and community members to take time this month to learn, listen, and engage with Indigenous perspectives, histories, and cultures.

Resources to explore this month:
• Local resources from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo: https://www.rmwb.ca/communities-and-neighbourhoods/truth-and-reconciliation/learn/national-indigenous-history-month/
• Indigenous resources available through the Keyano College Library: https://keyano.libguides.com/IndigenousResources
• Government of Canada National Indigenous History Month resources: https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/eng/1621447127773/1621447157184

Learning is a lifelong journey. By listening, learning, and walking together in respect, we can help build stronger communities and a more inclusive future for all.

Sisters Lillie and Angel Gillingham are taking on the Keyano College Environmental Technology Diploma together — and both were recently named recipients of the Imperial Environmental Technology Scholarship.

While Angel loves the hands-on field work, from digging soil pits to identifying wildlife tracks around the Fort McMurray region, Lillie enjoys the technical side of the program, including lab work, calculations, and working with environmental testing equipment. Together, they’re building careers rooted in science, curiosity, and the outdoors.

“As a student you have a lot of external pressures, and a lot of expectations. You need to pay your books, you need to pay your tuition. There's rent, and there's groceries. So receiving this award alleviates that pressure. It gives us the chance to seek out a better work-life balance.”

Thank you to Imperial Oil for your continued support of student success at Keyano College.

Keyano College is seeking research participants for a Government of Alberta-funded study examining how responding to natural disasters within one’s own community may impact Post-Traumatic Stress Injuries (PTSI) among first responders in the Wood Buffalo region.

We are inviting volunteer and career first responders who have responded to a natural disaster in the region to participate in a confidential survey or interview.

This research aims to better understand the experiences of first responders serving their own communities during times of crisis.

For eligibility details and participation information, please refer to the poster or contact [email protected].

This research project has been approved by Keyano College’s Research Ethics Board.
