Gabe Hrynick (UNB prof), Arthur Anderson (UNB adjunct), Matt Betts (UNB adjunct), and Dave Black (retired UNB prof/current honorary research prof) have recently published "Radiocarbon chronologies, coastal erosion, and archaeological visibility in the Quoddy Region, far northeastern North America” in the Journal of Archaeological Science-Reports. This paper joins a series of their recent papers about the erosion of the archaeological record. The paper is available (open access via the aegis of UNB libraries) at the following link:

MA student, Luke Petias Frimpong used a digital poster to showcase his ongoing research project at the Black Researchers Showcase, which was organized by the Human Rights Office, UNB. This event was part of the University’s celebration of the Black History month. In attendance of this event was Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle, the President of the University and other University officials.

Today, on World AIDS day, we are proud to feature the work of UNB professor, Dr. Koumari Mitra.
Dr. Koumari Mitra studied gender issues and other social determinants pertaining to women’s health in both India and Canada. Some of her major projects include adolescent and young women’s reproductive and sexual health; awareness of cervical cancer risk factors among high school and university students in New Brunswick; and documenting challenges faced by HIV positive women in the province.
One of her current research projects focuses on assessing the medical experiences and feasibility of harm reduction housing for high acuity groups including HIV positive people living in homelessness in New Brunswick.
In India, Dr. Koumari Mitra conducted research studies examining the gendered impact of globalization on HIV/AIDS transmission in urban slum areas of New Delhi. Currently, she is looking to examine the empowerment strategies that are available for vulnerable and marginalized groups including those living with HIV/AIDS in India.
Dr. Koumari Mitra has also supervised several MA Anthropology theses in this area of study including theses on developing a cross-cultural framework of analysis for HIV+ Women focusing on case studies from Kenya and New Brunswick; and harm reduction strategies for injection drug users in the province. Currently, she is supervising a MA student on developing a proposal for her thesis on substance drug users, HIV+ people living in homelessness in New Brunswick.
Dr. Koumari Mitra's work is especially meaningful today as we look to increase public knowledge about HIV/AIDS and its impact on global health.

🎧 Atlantic Voice Documentary: The Artifacts of Our Ancestors

A collection of Indigenous artifacts sat untouched for decades in the University of New Brunswick's Archives and Special Collections. When archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology at UNB began opening the boxes, what they found sparked a vital collaboration with the Wolastoqey Nation—opening new windows to the past and new ways forward.

The research is a collaboration among archaeologists, archivists, and community members from UNB, ULeth, and WNNB and is co-led by Trevor Dow (Academic Instructor at UNB), Dr. Gabe Hrynick (Professor at UNB), Dr. Ken Holyoke (Assistant Professor at ULeth and Adjunct Professor at UNB), Ramona Nicholas (Wabanaki Heritage Lead at UNB and member of Neqotkuk First Nation), and Christine Lovelace (Head Archivist at UNB Fredericton).
The documentary features just a handful of the voices at the heart of this important work, including: Dallas Tomah (UNB undergraduate student, WNNB researcher, and member of Wotstak First Nation) and Jamie Gorman (Resource Development and Consultation Coordinator with Neqotkuk First Nation), as well as Trevor, Ken, and Ramona. This collaboration demonstrates why partnerships among academic archaeologists, archivists, and descent communities are essential when analysing orphaned archive collections of artifacts and Indigenous belongings.
