Last week, the School of Leadership Studies hosted our third Research Celebration Day, bringing together students, faculty from Education and Arts, and community members.

Here’s what our faculty and PhD student presented:
⭐️ Dr. Mira Bachvarova: ethical and policy issues surrounding the use of ‘griefbots’ - the AI tools that create digital personalities of people who have died
⭐️ Dr. Julia Fursova: exploring transformative leadership for systems change with co-ops and social enterprises

Ambitious, curious, and not quite sold on a traditional university path? 🧐📚

We’re the School of Leadership Studies at UNB, offering an accelerated three-year university degree. Students complete both a Canadian and an international internship, one each summer between school years. Small cohorts, real-world experience, and a degree that connects ideas across fields instead of narrowing you into one. Our alumni leave with skills they can apply to any field, with many going on to medicine, education, law, and behavioural and health sciences. 🧑‍🏫👨‍⚕️👩‍⚖️

📣📣 This fall we’re hosting three live conversations. SLS staff and faculty will walk you through the program and take your questions, alongside a different SLS alumna at each session sharing what that path looks like firsthand. Pick whichever date works best, and if you decide to apply after, we’ll waive your $65 application fee.

At SLS, community life is shaped by how we gather, learn and engage with others, and a real pillar of that is how we show up for and with our local Indigenous communities. Indigenous perspectives and scholarship are part of coursework, and that relationship is carried further through Under One Sky Friendship Centre: guest speakers, land-based experiences, common reads, workshops, volunteering and shared meals at community events.

This is reconcili-action. Rather than approaching reconciliation as a one-time initiative, we treat it as a shared responsibility that continues to evolve through reflection, action and care.

Our building is more than a place where you go to class.

It’s a shared space for the whole SLS community. Students host events, share meals, study together, and relax between classes. People from every cohort cross paths here, alumni come back to reconnect, and you get to know your professors as people.

Creating community is a skill, and leaders need it wherever they go. Here, you get to practise it every day.

We shared photos from this year’s orientation camping trip, and one of our alumni replied with a welcome for our newest students 💌

She went on the trip with her class in 2002! This group will graduate from SLS rather than RC, but the program, the memories, and many of the traditions remain the same. Orientation camping trips have been part of it since the beginning!

Meet Erin Hancock (BPhil ‘05).

Erin is now Education Manager for the International Centre for Co-operative Management at Saint Mary’s University, helping co-operatives around the world put their values into everyday practice. She was also recognized in 2022 with a national award for her work in co-operative education!

For her Canadian internship, Erin worked with Intergovernmental Affairs in the Government of New Brunswick, supporting their engagement with visiting ambassadors and special guests. For her international internship, she spent a month in Japan and six weeks in Thailand, teaching English in public schools and evening classes.

Her advice to current students? Stay curious, don’t write people off, and use your class projects and internships to build real relationships.

Yesterday was pitch day for Community Problem Solving 👏

Community Problem Solving, or CPS, is a full-year capstone course taught by Dr. Roxanne Reeves and Dr. Christy Gray. Students spend the year working as “student consultants” alongside a community partner on a real project, gaining practical experience, new skills and professional connections along the way.

The class started by welcoming back two alumni, Lucy and Hillary (BPhil’25) who shared their own CPS experiences, lessons and takeaways with this year’s students.

Then came the pitches…. 🥁🥁

This year’s potential community partners presented their projects Dragons’ Den-style, sharing what students could work on, contribute to and learn throughout the year.
