Research Spotlight!

Dr. Petrea Taylor presented at the Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses Conference in Calgary, Alberta this week, sharing her research, “Limiting Compression by Making Room to be OK: Health Promotion in Women with Su***de Ideation.”

This research explores women’s experiences of promoting health and well-being while living with su***de ideation and introduces “making room to be OK” as a process for limiting the social and relational compression that can constrain women’s well-being.

Congratulations to Dr. Taylor and co-authors Dr. Sue O’Donnell, Dr. Kelly Scott-Storey, Jeannie Malcolm, and Charlene Vincent on this important contribution to mental health nursing research!

This past Tuesday, the Government of New Brunswick hosted our Moncton students for the annual Nursing Student Appreciation Event. The evening was dedicated to celebrating the hard work, dedication, and achievements of our future healthcare professionals.

We are proud to recognize Medjaj Garg, a Year 4 Nursing student from the UNB Saint John campus, who presented at Medical Rounds at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, September 24, alongside geriatrician Dr. Pamela Jarrett.

Their presentation, “Why Is My Grandmother Still in Hospital?”, shared findings from a recent study examining Alternate Level of Care (ALC) and the issue of patients waiting in hospital longer than necessary for an appropriate level of care.

As part of their Community & Population Health clinical, students had the opportunity to attend the Moving Forward Together Clinic, a collaborative community event that brings health, social, government, and community services together in one place to reduce barriers and improve access to supports for people experiencing vulnerability and housing insecurity.

Experiences like this give nursing students the opportunity to see community and population health nursing in action, learning alongside community partners, connecting with people where they are, and seeing firsthand the importance of collaboration, accessibility, and equity in health care.

UNB FNHS faculty and staff members Taylor Haw, Anne Baumann, Jaime Riley, and Dilpreet Singh recently welcomed the incoming Yukon cohort to the UNB FNHS Learn Where You Live Bachelor of Nursing program.

As part of their orientation, students received their virtual reality headsets and learned how this technology will support their learning throughout the program.

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome our very first cohort of PhD in Nursing students for their Residency Days!

Students joined us from New Brunswick and Ontario for three days of learning, connection, collaboration, and community-building. It was a wonderful way to begin this exciting new chapter for the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences, and we are so pleased to have this incredible group of students with us.
