Our Moncton Peer Mentors have been busy preparing to welcome our incoming nursing students!

Monday was a great day of collaboration between the UNB Faculty of Nursing & Health Sciences, the Fredericton Downtown Community Health Centre, and the SPECTRAL Spatial Computing Research Centre as we came together for a multidisciplinary planning session to design an immersive simulation for our new mobile outreach van.

The session brought together computer science and nursing educators, simulation experts, and nursing and social work staff from the Downtown Community Health Centre. Bringing these different perspectives to the same table is helping us design a simulation that reflects the realities of providing care through mobile outreach.

As part of the development process, the SPECTRAL team photographed and captured the interior of the mobile outreach van so they can digitally recreate the space for learners. This will allow UNB Nursing learners to enter an immersive virtual reality representation of the actual environment in which mobile outreach care is delivered and work through realistic clinical scenarios before encountering them in practice.

The simulation will challenge learners to assess a patient, recognize changes in clinical status, determine when care needs to be escalated, and communicate with a primary care provider through telehealth all while navigating the complexities of providing care outside of a traditional clinical setting.

As healthcare increasingly moves beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics, we also need to think differently about how we prepare nursing learners for these environments. This collaboration is an exciting opportunity to bring education, technology, simulation, and frontline practice together to create learning experiences grounded in the realities of community-based primary care.

Dr. Martha Paynter’s latest book, Lawless: Abortion under Complete Decriminalization, is longlisted for the 2026 J.W. Dafoe Book Prize! Jurors selected Lawless as one of the top ten books published this year on Canada, Canadians, or Canada’s place in the world. The winner of the J.W. Dafoe Book Prize, valued at $12,000, will be named October 13.

The prize memorializes John Wesley Dafoe, one of the most significant Canadian editors of the 20th century. It is one of the richest book awards for exceptional non-fiction in Canada.

Exciting news for Master of Nursing Student!

We are delighted to announce that Samara Wilson, a second-year, full-time Master of Nursing student who has already contributed to our women and suicidal ideation research, will continue working with our team through a $19,720 ResearchNB Partnerships for Social Innovation Fund award.

This funding supports our work to improve community-based support for women who have experienced suicidal thoughts. Building on previous research with women in New Brunswick, the project will bring together women with lived experience and Community Peer Support Workers from the Canadian Mental Health Association of New Brunswick (CMHA NB).

Together, we will explore how findings from our earlier work can be translated into meaningful, trauma- and violence-informed community supports. Our longer-term goal is to co-develop a community-based program that helps women feel safe, understood, validated, and supported, for future delivery by Community Peer Support Workers.

Congratulations to the second cohort of MAHE-UNB Dual Degree students for completing their four in-person UNB courses at the end of Year 3 of their program. This international collaboration admits 25 additional students to the Manipal College of Nursing for the Dual Degree program. These students complete their full Indian nursing curriculum at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India, while also completing supplementary modules and courses facilitated by UNB Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences in Canada. Teaching Professor Jessica Webster led the in-person courses, in which students learned in detail about the Canadian healthcare system, the TRC Calls to Action and sociohistorical context of colonization in Canada, social justice, health equity, and advancing their clinical judgement in nursing practice. In the spring, the students will be welcomed in Fredericton for a 6-week clinical course to apply knowledge in Canadian healthcare facilities before they graduate next fall. Congratulations on your hard work, students!
