Today is Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion where people across our diverse nation come together to honour and remember the men and women who courageously went to war on our behalf. These individuals sacrificed so much, often enduring unimaginable hardships, to protect the freedoms and values we hold dear.

One of the most enduring symbols of Remembrance Day is the poppy. This simple yet poignant flower carries deep significance and evokes a range of emotions and meanings.

As we wear our poppies and participate in ceremonies, let us take a moment to truly contemplate the weight of this day. Let us honour the memories of those who served and pay tribute to their enduring legacy.

Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) is a vibrant and heartfelt Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. This holiday honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away. Families create altars (ofrendas) adorned with photos, flowers, and favorite foods of the deceased to welcome their spirits back for a brief reunion. It’s a beautiful blend of Indigenous beliefs and Catholicism, filled with colorful decorations, music, and joy. 🌼💀✨

Meet Dr. Julien Defraeye – a friendly and outgoing Associate Professor who teaches French in St. Thomas University's Romance Languages Department. When not in the classroom, he studies eco- and zoopoetics in contemporary Québécois literature. His works have been published in numerous Canadian and International journals, and in 2022 he coordinated the edited volume of « Animal et animalité », published by Classiques Garnier. His most recent project on hunting narratives is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

In his spare time, Dr. Defraeye can be found training for his first marathon after recently completing a half marathon or enjoying fine wine and cheese while listening to French rap music from the 90s. 🍷🧀
