The Department of Culture and Media Studies in the Faculty of Arts at UNB Fredericton is the home of the Media Arts & Cultures program, the Comparative Cultural Studies program, and the Minor in Music. We also deliver language classes in Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Media Arts & Cultures (MAAC) allows you to analyze our modern media environment by looking at both the creation a
nd the effects of movies, TV shows, radio broadcasts, websites, magazines, comic books, video games, iPods and other media technologies. Arts majors who chose this program learn both the practical skills and critical background necessary to thrive in the digital media era. You'll not only discover how to interpret, analyze and understand the cultural role of media, you will also make and share your own media content. Comparative Cultural Studies (CCS) allows you to study and compare the many forms of cultural expression, and to understand how culture is foundational to communication, identity and community around the world. Arts majors who chose this program learn about culture(s) and arts across time periods and geographic origin, in a range of contexts and representations, and through practical and theoretical perspectives. Along with the study of a second language, you will take courses in a range of disciplines primarily from a cross-cultural perspective. The Minor in Music offers students from all faculties at UNB Fredericton the opportunity to enhance their musical knowledge through theory, history and analysis, and performance. If you want to delve deeper into music, this minor allows you to group a variety of music courses into a cohesive set. Spanish and German language courses are offered at the Introductory and Intermediate level. Chinese, Japanese, and Russian are offered at the Introductory level.
