Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice The Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada Our program at St.

Criminology is a discipline that seeks to understand how people behave in difficult, confusing, stressful, tragic, and bizarre situations. As the study of Criminology often involves political, social, and personal consideration, students learn to analyze theories of criminal behaviour and fairly and accurately evaluate criminal justice systems and policies. Thomas examines the people and institutions that affect, and are affected by, the justice system, exploring the impact on offenders, victims, and the public.

Simon Wassef, BA’21, is returning to STU to teach in the department of Criminology and Criminal Justice—a program his father Dr. Chris McCormick co-founded more than 20 years ago.

The pair have shared a passion for Criminology for as long as Wassef can remember and this fall, they’ll add a professional layer to their relationship as colleagues.

“It’s a tremendous honour to come back to a department that is so critically acclaimed and widely known among public service professionals in New Brunswick,” Wassef said.

“I love teaching and diving into the material, introducing new ideas, and being challenged by individuals who are learning something for the first time.”

Wrongfully Convicted - Lessons from the Canadian Registry by Prof. Kent Roach, University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Roach will explore themes from his 2023 book, Wrongfully Convicted: Guilty Pleas, Imagined Crimes, and What Canada Must Do to Safeguard Justice. He will discuss recommendations for addressing the causes of wrongful convictions, including better legislative oversight of law enforcement and forensic experts, and the creation of a permanent and independent federal commission to investigate wrongful convictions.

About Kent Roach

Prof. Roach has taught a course on wrongful convictions at the University of Toronto for more than twenty years and has examined several cases featuring unjust criminal convictions. With former students, he co-founded the Canadian Registry of Wrongful Convictions, a database of 83 publicly documented cases of exonerated wrongful convictions.

He has written seventeen books on criminal law, criminal procedure, constitutional law, and Indigenous justice. Canadian Justice and Indigenous Injustice: The Gerald Stanley and Colten Boushie Case (2019) was shortlisted for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, and Canadian Policing: Why and How it Must Change was a finalist for the 2022 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy and 2023 Donner Prize for Public Policy. He has written over 275 articles and chapters, served as editor-in chief of the Criminal Law Quarterly since 1998, and is regularly cited by the Supreme Court of Canada.
