An amazing new residency has launched in Fredericton!

The Anne Mitton Memorial Writer in Residence Program
Hosted by the Charlotte Street Arts Centre | Supported by the Anne Mitton Memorial Trust

About the Residency:
The Anne Mitton Memorial Writer in Residence Program honours the life and legacy of Fredericton educator, author, playwright, mentor, and storyteller Anne Mitton (1940–2026). Throughout her distinguished career, Anne inspired generations of learners and writers through her work as a teacher, literacy specialist, writing instructor, and published author. This residency reflects her lifelong commitment to nurturing creativity, encouraging emerging voices, and building community through the written word.

The successful applicant for this residency program will receive an $8,000 bursary to support their work over a six month period. One artist will be chosen each year for a fall-spring residency (November to April). During the residency, the Writer in Residence will:

- Focus primarily on the development of their own creative writing project.
- Lead one six-week community writing series designed for emerging writers or writers new to the craft.
- Facilitate one weekend intensive workshop on a writing topic of their choice.
- Participate in a public reading and celebration showcasing both their work and selected work from workshop participants.

Given Anne's interdisciplinary writing career, this residency is open to a broad range of literary practices: Applications are welcomed from writers working in:

Fiction
Creative non-fiction
Poetry
Playwriting

Applications will be accepted between September 15 and October 16, 2026. The residency will run for six months.

This fall Theatre UNB is set to stage Shorelines, an environmental thriller written by award-winning Canadian playwright Mishka Lavigne. This poetic play follows four occupants of a small town surrounded by levees barely holding the rising global shorelines. As twins Alix and Evan await evacuation orders, they bide their time salvaging what they can and taking care of their Gran, a retired journalist living with dementia whose memories of a different time come back to haunt her. Government official Portia is also haunted by memories of a past life that she has spent years hiding from, and as she wanders back through familiar places, her present and past collide. When everyone’s survival is suddenly threatened, the twins race to their grandmother, and secrets and forgotten memories come out just before the final flood.
Playwright Mishka Lavigne is a two-time winner of the Governor General’s Award for French Language drama. Shorelines was short-listed for the Governor General’s Award for English language, making Lavigne the first person nominated for both the French and English versions of the award.
Shorelines is directed by Jorja Taylor with technical direction and design done by Tye Murphy. Performances will take place Oct 22nd
-Oct 24th at 7:30 nightly at Memorial Hall, UNB.
Tickets ($15 regular, $12 senior/underemployed and $10 for students) are available at the door.

It's poetry season!

We’re especially excited for the launch of three new chapbooks! Congrats to our alumni Ambrose Albert and Grace R.
