Alberta College of Body Art Canada’s ONLY provincially licensed tattoo and piercing training program! ABOUT US
- Tattooing is not a recognized trade in Canada, yet.

This program is the first of its kind in Alberta, and the FIRST IN CANADA to be provincially accredited as a post secondary institution, eligible for student loans!

- Training includes visual aids, theory/book-work, industry professional guest speakers, synthetic skin practice, live model tattooing, quizzes and exam.

- There are no "prerequisites" aside from being 18, though a pre-existing artistic ability is strongly recommended.

**The purpose of this Program is to provide entry level instruction on safety and the basics only, and the content is continuously assessed and/or updated for relevance.**It does not guarantee you a career in tattooing; it takes passion, dedication and practice to hone skill and confidence.**

There is more than one legitimate way to pursue body-art education.

A structured apprenticeship can be a valid pathway. ACBA provides a defined program structure, direct instruction and supervised practical learning in a professional environment.

When comparing pathways, focus on the details: curriculum depth, instructor involvement, safety education, practice opportunities and the support available to students.

Technical skills develop through repeated, supervised practice.

At ACBA, students progress from theory and synthetic-skin training to tattooing real people under instructor supervision. Throughout the program, students complete more than 40 live tattoos, giving them repeated opportunities to apply what they have learned in real tattoo sessions.

That experience includes more than the tattoo itself. Students practise workstation setup and breakdown, client communication, positioning, time management, technique, aftercare and professional conduct.

Live-skin experience introduces variables that synthetic skin cannot fully reproduce. That is why supervised practical learning is built into ACBA’s Tattoo Artist Certificate.

Tattoo education needs both understanding and application.

Online theory can support the knowledge side of learning, while technical tattooing skills require supervised, in-person instruction and practice. That combination gives students opportunities to connect what they learn with how professional tattooing is approached in the studio.

ACBA’s hybrid learning model reflects the difference between studying the principles and developing technical skills through guidance and practice.

A tattoo machine is a tool. Professional tattoo education is about learning how to use that tool safely, responsibly and effectively.

Comprehensive training goes beyond equipment. It includes technical knowledge, anatomy, skin, healing, infection prevention, supervised practice, feedback, client safety and professional conduct.

Equipment alone cannot provide instruction, identify mistakes or guide technical development. Strong foundations are built through education, deliberate practice and informed feedback.

A serious education in tattooing includes more than time spent at a workstation.

Technical practice is one part of preparing for professional studio expectations. Students also need opportunities to build knowledge around the broader responsibilities of body-art work, including professional practice, client care and the business side of working in the industry.

The goal is not just to learn how something is done. It is to understand the knowledge, standards and responsibilities that support the work.
