We stand for excellence in undergraduate and graduate-level geoscience research and education.

The Harquail School of Earth Sciences (HES) and Mineral Exploration Research Centre comprise award-winning faculty (including three GAC-MDD Duncan Derry Medal winners) and award-winning students, and presently have the highest level of NSERC and TGI funding in economic geology of any university in Canada. HES and MERC are housed in the Willet Green Miller Centre, overlooking Ramsey Lake and the La

urentian Lake Conservation Area. Located in the world's largest mining cluster in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, on the rim of one of the world's oldest, largest, and best-exposed asteroid impact sites, and on rocks of the Canadian Shield, we have a setting for field-based teaching and research that cannot be duplicated elsewhere.

Highlights from our GEOL 2006 Field Geology I at Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne this week 🌎 🔨 💎

The main objectives was for the six student teams (18 students in total) to complete three maps in three geological settings, along with reports detailing geological observations and inferences on the timing of geological events in each particular terrain.

Petrographic technologist Jason Tessier is demonstrating how fundamental geoscience questions can be answered at Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne with the help of thin sections.

Here, he is demonstrating a thin section with an oriented quartz crystal twin (Brazil Law) to a local teacher.

In preparation for Field School I starting on Aug 31, Tobias Roth was practicing field geology teaching skills with Dr. Douglas Tinkham who has been teaching the course since 2007 but will now be on a well-deserved sabbatical to advance his metamorphic geology research.

Mehdi’s thesis is on a project supervised by Drs. Bruno Lafrance and Ross Sherlock.

The title is “Deep crustal architecture of the Wabigoon-Quetico boundary and
structural evolution of the Quetico Fault system, Atikokan area, NW Ontario: insights from geophysical data interpretation and fieldwork.”

Large amounts of Sudbury Breccia on Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne campus!

Sudbury Breccia is a rock type found in City of Greater Sudbury that formed when the originally layered sedimentary bedrock got obliterated by a 10km diameter space rock ☄️1.85 billion years ago, see the area labelled ‘fractured shocked rocks’ in the cartoon.

In the minutes after the collision, broken fragments the size of school busses 🚌 were moving around a lot. They were violently rubbing against one another, causing further breakage into angular chunks, but also rounded the smaller pieces.

In the following millions of years (see sketches), mountain building ⛰️and a lot of erosion mostly from major glaciations 🥶produced a section of the crater floor that we can easily explore now.
