This World Food Day, we're highlighting the next generation of leaders improving environmental sustainability across the agri-food sector. 🌎

Through 's Master of Sustainable Agriculture program, Ellyse Newman is discovering how agricultural practices can balance environmental, economic and social priorities while feeding a growing global population.

“We get the opportunity to tour a wide range of agri-food operations across Ontario, which gave me a better understanding of where the sector is heading,” she says.

By combining these learning opportunities with hands-on experience as a farm operations manager in Brant County, Ellyse is developing the knowledge and practical skills to help make future food systems more resilient and productive.

What can landscape architects learn from the founder of Four Seasons?

’s Landscape Architecture students recently had the opportunity to hear from Isadore Sharp, founder of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, about his approach to design, service and creating places where people want to be.

While his career has been mostly in hospitality, many of the ideas behind the Four Seasons experience connect directly to landscape architecture: understanding how people use and experience a space, paying attention to the details and creating places that feel intentional and welcoming.

It was a chance for students to hear directly from someone who has spent decades thinking about the way people experience their surroundings, and to consider how those ideas might apply to their own work as future landscape architects.

It’s Ontario Agriculture Week, a time to recognize the people, ideas and innovations strengthening agriculture across the province. 🌾

Jack McNichol, a MSc Plant Agriculture student, is researching how differences in phosphorus levels across farmland affect corn and soybean crops.

His work is focused on finding the right balance of fertilizer to support strong yields, while avoiding unnecessary applications.

“One field isn't uniform and it won't have the same phosphorus or potassium across the entire field,” Jack says.

Through field trials at the Ontario Research Centre in Elora, Jack is studying how crops respond to different phosphorus levels. His research could help improve fertilizer recommendations and support more precise nutrient management.

It’s one example of the agricultural research happening across , where students and researchers are helping address the challenges facing Ontario’s food system.
