Gryphon Racing

Gryphon Racing is a student run, applied engineering and design club at the University of Guelph and participates in the Formula SAE competition series.

The team consists of approximately 45 undergrad and grad student from a range of faculties and engineering disciplines. Together we work to design, build, test and race a new formula style car each year. Formula SAE is a student design competition organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The goal is to have student teams design, build and test a prototype car based on FSAE competition rul

es that are created to ensure onsite event operation and promote clever problem solving. The FSAE series has a variety of events and Gryphon Racing attends several each year with the first being FSAE Michigan each May. In 2004 Gryphon Racing was the first (and only ever) team to design a gas powered AWD car. To our knowledge, Gryphon Racing is the only team to mount their engine longitudinally and use a solid shaft driven differential as opposed to a chain drive. The team has now started using carbon fibre for many of the body components and used "green" bio based EcoTek resins in parts of the body.

Gryphon Racing will be holding its first meeting of the year next Thursday September 15th from 7-9pm in the Richards building room 3504. The meeting will include a general introduction to the club and information from each subsection. After our meeting is over, we are going to have people come by the shop to check out our workspace. If you are unable to attend, please contact one of the captains to discuss alternatives. We really hope to see you all there!

As the new school year begins Gryphon Racing would like to introduce some new and familiar faces for the new season! The team will be starting various recruitment events within the month for any interested students so stay tuned. As we enter into the year of our team's 20th anniversary, Gryphon Racing has been hard at work developing our first ever electric race car. With this big change from gasoline to electric comes many additional costs. To help fund the transition to electric racing, we are launching a fundraising campaign dedicated to the staff of the University of Guelph and the School of Engineering who has helped the team through the past 20 years. Our goal is to raise $10000 before the unveiling of their new electric race car in the spring of 2022. We hope that you will consider supporting us in this exciting milestone for one of Guelph Engineering's longest running design teams.
