MACDONALD INSTITUTE houses the Office of the Dean, College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. College department offices are located in the Macdonald Institute, the MacKinnon Building and the H.L. Welcome to the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS), which traces its origins and traditions to the establishment of the Macdonald Institute, one of the University of Guelph's three fo

unding colleges. CSAHS has nearly 5,000 undergraduate students, more than 300 graduate students and 200 faculty and staff. The college provides programming in a range of social science and applied human science disciplines and support to discipline-based and inter/multi-disciplinary researchers. The overarching goal of the college is to serve society through the provision of world-class education supported by innovative programs of research and outreach. We believe that the best education in the 21st century is one that combines academic study and real life experience. Our goal is to instill in students the knowledge, skills, awareness and critical sense of engagement with society that will enable them to reach their full potential to make a difference wherever they go in the world. The strength of the college lies in the capacity and achievement of its people, ample evidence of which can be found in past issues of the CSAHS Insight (formerly the CSAHS Bulletin) and elsewhere in this website. In Research, you will learn of the tremendous growth in activity that has occurred in recent years and of the impact of the college's researchers in their chosen fields and in society generally. In Advancement, you will learn about the rich heritage built by 11 decades of alumni and of the many ways in which our graduates support the life and objectives of the college and the university. The college is comprised of five departments: Family Relations and Applied Nutrition (FRAN), Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology and Anthropology. These departments offer a range of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, several of which are professionally accredited. The college is also home to two large inter-disciplinary programs – International Development Studies and Criminal Justice and Public Policy – that draw on expertise housed in several academic units. The college is committed to conducting research that is socially responsive, engaged with the community and effective in shaping public policy. It has two very unique structures that facilitate this work including The Centre for Families, Work and Wellbeing (CFWW) and the Institute on Community Engaged Scholarship (ICES) (including the Research Shop). These are active sites of collaboration among faculty, students and community partners and exemplify the college's commitment to community engaged scholarship, knowledge mobilization and social transformation. As we put teaching and research into practice, CSAHS strives above all else to improve the everyday quality of life for individuals and families – at home, in the workplace and in communities near and far.

Happy ! We are happy to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, and the progress made toward a more inclusive and equitable environment at U of G. 🌈😍🏫

Throughout the month of June, we’ll be highlighting some of the important CSAHS research that helps create a welcoming campus community, while also acknowledging the challenges that 2SLGBTQI+ people face daily.

We want to emphasize the importance of acceptance, diversity, and love, and the collective responsibility we share in creating a space where everyone feels valued and a true sense of belonging.

Today marks the start of National Indigenous History Month! This month is an opportunity to learn about the depth and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, cultures, languages, and worldviews.

Something that we plan to do as a College within U of G, is acknowledge Canada’s ongoing colonialism and recognize the persistent systemic discrimination that Indigenous families and communities experience.

Throughout June, we will share the ongoing work that CSAHS researchers who aim to help better understand or address concerns that indigenous people still face today.

Starting today, May 31 to June 6, it’s National Accessibility Week!

This year’s theme, “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada,” asks that we work toward a barrier-free country.

U of G’s CSAHS has many initiatives that aim to be welcoming and accessible to all, including the Live Work Well (LWW) Research Centre. Their research is organized around five intersecting clusters that examine complex themes shaping work, family, and well-being in all their diverse forms.

In recognition of National Accessibility Week, LWW attempts to learn more about issues at the intersection of disability, livelihoods, access, and inclusion through the LWW Disabilities, Access, and Inclusion (DAL) research cluster.

For more about this cluster at LWW, check out their website: https://liveworkwell.ca/research/disabilities-access-and-inclusion/

Ummay Huni Sumi, a grad student in Geography speaks to their experience that changed the way they think about food security. "I realized that food access isn’t just about nutrition, cost, or whether food is physically available. It also involves culture, dignity, emotional well-being, and feeling at home in a new place.”

In their Looking Glass feature, Ummay reflects on how lived experience shaped their understanding of food access, and how community-based work in Bangladesh sparked new questions once they arrive in Canada.

One thing that's fun about working in the CSAHS Dean's Office is that you get to stay "hip" by talking to the student employees. 🎀💁🏽‍♀️✨

I think that by using the word hip, we're officially not hip again...

Have a great Monday!

A new study published in BioScience, co-authored by U of G researcher Dr. Faisal Moola, argues that the traditional stewardship practices of Indigenous Peoples are critical for conservation. His research highlights how Indigenous Peoples interaction with nature serves numerous benefits for biodiversity in Canadian ecosystems.

Dr. Moola talks about the practices that support culturally important species, and warns that current western conservation systems overlook or obstruct these practices. Addressing this gap could lead to more effective and equitable biodiversity governance, researchers say.

Last week, University of Guelph welcomed future Gryphons to campus, and a lot of parents were there for the ride.

We asked incoming CSAHS students how they were feeling about going to university, but we didn't forget to ask the parents how they felt about their kids going AWAY to university!

How did you feel as a soon to be Gryphon and how do you feel about being a Gryphon now?!

Let us know with an emoji in the comments! 🦅+🦁 =😁
