MA in European Studies, University of Guelph

MA in European Studies, University of Guelph This innovative interdisciplinary programme combines humanities and social science perspectives to the study of Europe, both past and present.

It aims to provide students with a flexible, interdisciplinary approach to European Studies that allows for specialization within a core discipline and promotes expertise in European languages, culture, history, and contemporary politics and society. The faculty for this interdisciplinary programme is drawn from several Schools and Departments, spanning two Colleges, the College of Arts and Colleg

e of Social and Applied Human Sciences. Faculty members have research interests in such diverse areas as European identities (gender, minorities, national), youth cultures, literature, music and art in comparative perspective, Western philosophy, EU governance and policies, European citizenship and migration policies. Students who graduate from this programme will be equipped to pursue further study at the PhD level in an interdisciplinary or a single-discipline programme, or embark on careers in national and international organizations that focus on Europe.

2020 Guaranteed Funding
Successful applicants are guaranteed competitive funding support: a minimum of two Graduate Teaching Assistantships (approximately $5,925 per assistantship x 2 = $11,850). Students with strong qualifications will also receive a top-up scholarship in amounts which range from $6,000 to $14,000. By applying to the program candidates are automatically considered for the two GTA positions and for scholarships; there is no need to apply separately for funding. In the 2020 admissions round, the University of Guelph will match the funding packages offered by other universities. Students who are considering other offers are asked to give us the opportunity to match competing funding packages.
Pedagogical Training and Teaching Experience
In addition to the financial assistance provided by the two GTA positions, the School of Languages and Literatures considers the teaching experience it gives its graduate students to be a great opportunity for professional development. At the beginning of the fall semester, the School provides training in pedagogy to all incoming graduate students. Students may also choose to attend, without cost, the on-campus Graduate Student Teaching Conference prior to the start of the fall semester, as well as additional seminars and workshops offered by Teaching and Support Services throughout the academic year. Upon completion of a combination of these opportunities, students will receive a College of Arts certificate.
