✨ Remarks from special guest speakers
✨ Student insights into the importance of preceptor relationships in teaching and learning

We are thrilled to announce Emma Toole to the School Mentorship Team, filling the role of Disability-Informed / Lived Experience Mentor. Emma is a 2024 Dal MScOT graduate and has been working as a community and school Occupational Therapist with Nova Scotia Health. Her training includes placements across a range of settings, including inpatient care, hand therapy, pediatrics, and community practice, which helped shape a broad and adaptable approach to OT.

In a mentorship role, Emma aims to foster an open environment to help think through challenges, strengthen clinical reasoning, and support growing confidence. Emma is excited to assist students in advocating for themselves and supporting them as they navigate their paths toward their professional goals.

If you are a current School of OT student interested in connecting with Emma, you can find her contact information on the School Brightspace announcement board page. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, learn more about our mentorship program opportunities here: https://tinyurl.com/368yph29

An enduring assumption in occupation-related scholarship is that occupations can, do, and should promote human health. Yet, throughout history, people have sacrificed personal and collective health for other more desired outcomes. And, unfortunately, many people engage in occupations that intentionally or unintentionally harm others.

What happens when we disentangle occupation from health? What could be more important than understanding relationships between occupation and health? These are some of the questions that will be explored in this presentation.

This presentation, The Significance, of Occupation Beyond Health, will focus on possibilities associated with undertaking research centred on broad political, economic, and social concepts. Drawing on current occupational science literature, the significance of occupation will be explored in relation to concepts such as: humanity, citizenship, relationships with the earth, harmony, and equity. Embracing the importance of occupations beyond health opens opportunities to create knowledge and influence actions that respond to important moral and political concerns of contemporary society.

We hope you’ll join us, January 23rd, in Tupper Theatre D, Carlton Campus from 5 - 6pm for this Townsend Polatajko Lectureship with School, Faculty Researcher, Dr Niki Kiepek.
