Nova Scotia’s universities and colleges are an economic beacon for communities across the province.
The province provided $590 million in operating grants for higher education in 2022/23, accounting for 32.5% of university revenue. The economic impact of that investment extends beyond campus: students from outside Nova Scotia pay tuition, rent homes and shop locally, while university research brings funding and activity to the province.
Spending associated with those students and higher education research generated $1.49 billion in direct activity. Purchases from suppliers and spending by workers brought the estimated total to $2.3 billion across Nova Scotia. That activity contributed approximately $1.5 billion to provincial GDP and supported about 21,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
Strong public universities and colleges help Nova Scotia attract people and investment while building the knowledge and capacity our communities need for the future.
