The Schulich School of Law is pleased to introduce Amy Zheng, the newest member of the Career Development Office (CDO).

As the administrative coordinator, she supports the CDO’s programs, events, recruitment processes, and student services to help ensure everything runs smoothly for law students and employers alike.

“I want students to know they have someone they can turn to for support. I'll take the time to listen, help answer their questions, connect them with the right resources, and follow through when additional assistance is needed,” she says. “I try to put myself in their shoes in an effort to better understand their perspectives, and I strive to approach every interaction with empathy, understanding, and a commitment to helping them succeed.”

The Schulich School of Law would like to extend a warm welcome to Brendan Barrett, the new director of Student and Academic Affairs.

In this position, he will advise law students on academic challenges, concerns, requirements, planning, and strategies for success. Brendan brings close to 20 years of experience in post-secondary education, where he held senior leadership roles overseeing critical institutional operations such as academic timetabling, student records, systems, and convocation.

“I was drawn to this opportunity because it combines my passion for supporting students and faculty with my interest in academic policies and regulations,” he shares. “I was also inspired by the law school’s commitment to the Weldon Tradition of unselfish public service, a value that strongly resonates with me.”

❓Did you know❓ that every year, the Schulich School of Law awards over $2 million to our students to help with the cost of their legal education, and that over 60% of our students receive financial aid of some form?

Applications are now being accepted for the law school's bursaries and scholarships for the upcoming academic year.

Students are encouraged to attend an information session hosted by members of the Bursaries & Scholarships Committee on Tuesday, September 8 at 12:30pm, to learn more about the process or ask questions.

Congratulations to Dalhousie Law School alumna, the Honourable Judge Corrine E. Sparks (LLB '79, LLM '01), who was recently appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor Mike Savage announced the 10 new appointments on August 14. The province's highest honour, it recognizes individuals who’ve made significant contributions to Nova Scotia across a diverse range of fields.

A jurist, legal educator, and community leader, Sparks was recognized for advancing equity and human rights and for her ground-breaking contributions to Nova Scotia’s and Canada’s legal professions.

She is a member of the Schulich School of Law's Bertha Wilson Honour Society (2015), received the Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service (2020), and was appointed to the Order of Canada earlier this year. Sparks retired from the Bench on December 31, 2021.

In total, 146 members have been invested into the Order of Nova Scotia since it was established in June 2001. This year's new members will be celebrated at an investiture ceremony this fall, where they will receive their insignia and appointment scroll.

Published twice a year by the Schulich School of Law, the Dalhousie Law Journal is one of North America’s few faculty-run publications with an editorial board composed exclusively of full-time professors and professional librarians.

It aims to enhance dialogue, analysis, and policy reform across a variety of legal areas through the publication and dissemination of new knowledge — and while it publishes work on all legal topics, it is most commonly a venue for evidence-informed, policy-relevant contributions.
