Congratulations to Schulich Law Associate Professor and Chancellor’s Chair in Aboriginal Law and Policy Naiomi Metallic, KC, (BA ’02, LLB ’05), on the release of the 2026 Student Edition of ‘Constitutional Law of Canada’ by Peter Hogg and Wade Wright.

Metallic was the lead author of a new chapter, titled ‘Indigenous Peoples and the Constitution of Canada,’ and worked closely with Wright and several prominent Indigenous law scholars on the 300+ page addition. The chapter updates terminology, incorporates discussions of Indigenous law and international law, identifies areas where current doctrine has been criticized, and introduces new sections on history and context, constitutional sources, and constitutional principles.

When Adrienne Graham (JD '26) was a law student, she was determined to gain hands-on experience with an internship in criminal defence. As most internship opportunities help support not-for-profit organizations, she knew her goal could prove challenging and her persistence paid off when she connected with Sarah Black, founder and lead lawyer of the small, all-female team at Kingston, Ontario-based Black Criminal Law.

During her internship, Graham watched Black tailor her meetings for each client – from the complexity of the explanation she provided to the emotional support she offered to the community partners she recommended – and approach each file with the utmost care.

“This internship was truly invaluable, shaping the kind of advocate I aspire to be,” she shares. “I had an idea going into law school that I wanted to pursue criminal law, but this experience confirmed that it is the right fit for me. Seeing people in this field who enjoy and feel passionate about their work, even on challenging days, was truly inspiring.”

The Schulich School of Law Internship Program was first introduced in 2009. Since then, it has awarded $3.3 million in funds and has placed 557 students with 295 organizations, making it the largest paid summer law internship program in the country.

On Sunday, October 4th, a group of dedicated walkers and runners from the Weldon community will come together as a team to participate in the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure in Halifax.

A message from the Dalhousie Law Students team:

"Our Dal Law community is known for its spirit and commitment through the Weldon Tradition, and we are proud to channel that energy into raising both awareness and essential funds for this important cause.

October 1st marks the beginning of Mi’kmaw History Month, a time to celebrate Mi’kmaw culture, language, and traditions, and to deepen our understanding of the history of the Mi’kmaq as the original people of this land.

We also mark Treaty Day on October 1st, a day of reflection and recognition of the Peace and Friendship Treaties, celebrating Mi’kmaw culture and resilience, while calling on all in Mi’kma’ki to honour the strength of Mi’kmaw communities, recognize the ongoing work of upholding treaty relationships, and reflect on what it means to live together in peace and friendship.

On Monday, September 21, the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, Chief Justice of Canada, confirmed that the Supreme Court of Canada will visit Halifax from September 20-24, 2027, to hear appeals and meet with members of the public.

This visit to the East Coast will continue the Court’s tradition of sitting outside Ottawa to bring Canada's highest court closer to the people it serves. The Court previously visited Winnipeg in 2019 and Quebec City in 2022.

Schulich School of Law Dean Sarah Harding (LLB ’89) serves on the organizing committee and shares that this visit to Halifax will be an historic and unprecedented opportunity for the local legal community and for the law school as well.

“I’m thrilled that our students and faculty will have the immense privilege of spending half a day with the justices,” she says. “I can’t imagine a more inspiring and memorable experience to ground one’s legal career.”

As it did while in Winnipeg and Quebec City, the Court will participate in a variety of activities with members of the public, students and the legal community. Further details regarding the appeals to be heard and the Court's program of activities will be announced closer to the visit.
