Learning doesn’t have an age limit. Betty Veinot’s story shows how curiosity and resilience can open doors at any stage of life. This week, as part of Dalhousie University convocation ceremonies, she crossed the stage in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in the Dalhousie Arts Centre to receive a diploma in Costume Studies from the Fountain School of Performing Arts, Dalhousie University. Congratulations Betty!

Congratulations to the 2026 spring graduates of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Dalhousie University!

On Monday, June 1st, more than 300 FASS grads crossed the stage at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in the Dalhousie Arts Centre, and many of them joined us at a reception that was held between the two ceremonies. University Teaching Fellow at Dalhousie University Lesley Choyce says a former student’s determination while living with ALS inspired the characters in his latest novel, reflecting resilience, creativity, and the lasting impact of stories born from real lives.

He’s planning on using No More Fridays, his 105th published book, as a basis for a book tour this spring and summer at a number of Nova Scotian libraries centred around workshops on how individuals from real life inspire great characters in novels.

University Teaching Fellow Lesley Choyce says a former student’s determination while living with ALS shaped his latest novel, reflecting resilience, creativity, and the lasting impact of stories born from real lives.
