From sod and mud to pollinator habitat 🌼🐝

This Earth Day marked step one. We removed sod prepared the ground (📷 3), mixed a native wildflower blend from with sand (📷2), seeded (📷 1), and covered with straw across the Cameron Hall bank (📷 4) and a small garden behind the Killam. Before shown in 📷 5.

Under the pines by Cameron Hall, we also began prepping a future planting site using cardboard to suppress grass (📷6, before in 8)—another garden coming later this summer 🌱

This project centres sustainability and upcycling, from reused totes to DIY sod staples made from old hangers (📷7) ♻️

By next fall, these spaces will be transformed into pollinator-friendly habitats 🌿

Next up: Pollinator Week in June—stay tuned 👀

Big thanks to Environmental Services and all the volunteers who helped make this day possible 💚

And thank you to WWF Go Wild for supporting this project 💫

This is your chance to recognize meaningful contributions to campus sustainability. From waste reduction and energy-saving initiatives to community-led environmental projects, we want to hear about the efforts making a real difference.

The award is open to all students, staff, and faculty. You can nominate a peer or submit a self-nomination (self-nominations require a reference).

The award is given once per semester, with three sets of recipients celebrated each year. Each winner will be highlighted on our website and social media, and receive a digital certificate of recognition.

Help us celebrate the people advancing sustainability at Dalhousie! Find more details and access the nomination form through the link in our bio or the URL in the post above.

What a success the SDG Expo was for the second year in a row!

Bringing together around 450 students, researchers, and community members to share ideas, showcase 48 research projects, and connect across 32 booths, it was a powerful day of displaying the movement towards a more sustainable future! From innovative research to meaningful collaborations, this year’s Expo highlighted the power of interdisciplinary action on the SDGs.

A huge congratulations to all presenters and award winners, and thank you to our partners and sponsors who made it all possible.

This , we’re spotlighting our March food audit in Howe Hall as part of the Food Impact Network (FIN)

This is a national project, and we’re proud to be one of 10 institutions participating—now in Year 2!

Over the course of the audit, our team or staff and volunteers:
- Weighed post-consumer food waste
- Captured images of plate waste
- Took a closer look at what’s being left behind

We’re working to better understand:
• How much consumer food is wasted
• Which food groups and menu items are most commonly discarded
• What portion of waste is non-edible (napkins, fruit peels, eggshells, chicken bones, etc.)

We’re currently deep in data analysis, and will be sharing results in the fall. These insights will help inform strategies to reduce food waste and encourage more plant-forward menu choices across campus.

Remember: take what you’ll eat, and eat what you take! You can always go back for more!
