Dalhousie Classics

Dalhousie Classics The Department also administers the Program in Religious Studies. Through us, you can learn Latin, ancient Greek, Hebrew and modern Arabic.

The Department of Classics offers a variety of classes in Greek and Roman literature, ancient and Medieval philosophy, ancient and Christian religion, and general classical culture. Many doors open into the Classical and Medieval world through Dalhousie’s Department of Classics. The study of mythology, literature, history, philosophy, religion, Arabic, Greek, Latin and Hebrew enable an understandi

ng of what formed Western culture and show us how European civilization arose out of the great accomplishments of the ancient Mediterranean peoples. The very idea of university – the systematic study of logic, theology, science, philosophy, medicine – has its roots in ancient Greece. Studying the philosophy, literature, history and languages of ancient Greece and Rome forms the core of our program, but Classics is a crossroads between Western and Eastern thought. We examine how the fundamental ideas, beliefs, and institutions formed when Greek and Middle Eastern cultures met thousands of years ago. Modern languages are full of words deriving from Greek and Latin and classical myths continue to inspire everything from Shakespearean drama to Disney films. Classics starts you on a journey of discovery that lasts a lifetime.

Our students and alumni may be interested in this event. For those of you who do not know him, Dr. Crouse was a much beloved and deeply influential professor of Patristics and Medieval Philosophy in the Dalhousie Classics Department.

The Rev’d Dr. Andrew Louth will deliver the 2021 Robert Crouse Memorial Lecture, entitled “The Necessity of Platonism for Christian Theology” on Sunday, January 17 at 4 p.m.

The Platonic foundations of Christian theology was a central theme of the scholarship of Fr. Crouse. For him, the wisdom of the Greeks was not superseded by Christian revelation, but built upon and brought to its fulfillment. Building on his recent work on the writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Fr. Louth will explore this theme in honour of Fr. Crouse, he says, “hoping this will be a fitting tribute to one I much admire.”

The lecture will be delivered remotely, as Father Louth lives in England. All are welcome to join on Zoom from wherever they are, including for the Q&A session which follows the lecture. To sign up to receive the Zoom link, please http://kingschapel.ca/crouse. Registration will close at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 16.

Further information about Andrew Louth, or about Robert Crouse, in whose memory the lecture will be given, can also be found at http://www.kingschapel.ca/crouse.
