In 2021, a non-credit writing course with MFA mentor Cooper Lee Bombardier encouraged Fay Martin, MFA’23, to dig deeper into her story of being her husband Michael’s caregiver in the years leading up to his death: a story of love, duty, and ultimately, resilience.

Shortly after the course, Martin enrolled in the MFA in Creative Nonfiction program, and, earlier this year, she published The Dementia Widow. The memoir details her experience as a caregiver for Michael from the time of his dementia onset in his 50s until his death 15 years later.

“The man you married is gone... and to be a caregiver is a very different role than being—at least my version of—a wife,” says Martin. “So that’s where the dementia widow comes from.”

Save the date! On June 24 Patrick Radden Keefe will deliver a public lecture in Alumni Hall, moderated by Director of Writing & Publishing Gillian Turnbull.
Keefe is an investigative journalist, author of five books (including Empire of Pain, a Barack Obama Favorite Book of the Year) and a longtime feature writer for the New Yorker. His work is known for its in-depth research and compelling narratives which tell the most urgent stories of our time. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from him!

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A.
