Kieran D’Sena’s journey at McMaster started 22 years ago. Diagnosed with blood cancer at age two, Kieran was treated at McMaster Children’s Hospital. That experience is what first drew him to iBioMed, hoping to learn how to save others the way he was saved.

Sometimes things don’t go to plan, but you end up where you’re meant to be. One of the pediatricians who treated Kieran told him something that changed his entire trajectory when they reconnected at Mac: confusing gratitude with purpose is one of the most dangerous things a person can do, and passion has to be the real reason you stay. So, he chased his passion instead of his past, taking him straight to Engineering Physics.

As our final valedictorian, swipe through for more snippets from Kieran’s speech.

Muskaan Opel was transformed during her time at McMaster. Learning to take chances and embracing the challenge of leadership roles, Muskaan found herself on the McMaster Engineering Society (MES) exec, which led to further involvement in various engineering communities. Putting yourself out there and staying connected are the values she’s taking away from her time at Mac Eng.

Swipe through for highlights from her valedictory address.

Though Nicholas Koenig just closed the book on his time at Mac Eng, his impact will still be felt for years to come through the students he worked with. As both a redsuit and creator of the mentorship program within the McMaster Engineers with Disabilities (MEwD) club, Nicholas played an important role in setting our students up for success.

As one of our three valedictorians, swipe through for some highlights from his address to our graduating class.

A new McMaster innovation could reshape how silicone is used in medical implants and devices.

Led by Chem Eng PhD candidate Norma Garza Flores, an interdisciplinary research team developed a new silicone material that resists clotting and reduces the body’s foreign body response while maintaining the flexibility and strength surgeons value in medical-grade silicone.

A collab between Mac Eng and Health Sci, the team achieved this by chemically bonding the polymer directly to the silicone network, rather than applying a surface coating.

Learn more about the work that lays the foundation for safer, more durable medical devices in future clinical applications at the link in bio.
