Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, Olive Thomas spent years exploring the city's waterfalls. Now, she's helping uncover the stories they can tell about the landscape around them.

The McMaster Environmental Science master's student has visited more than 40 of the city's 100+ waterfalls, turning a passion for the outdoors into research on erosion, groundwater and ice formation.

As part of the Niagara Escarpment Erosion Project (NEEP), Thomas is studying how these natural landmarks change over time and how that knowledge could help shape Hamilton's future.

McMaster has been ranked in the top 5% of universities worldwide, according to a new global ranking.

The university ranks 4th in Canada and is one of the best globally for research excellence and industry partnerships in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Overall, McMaster placed 116th among a field of more than 2,000 public and private universities.

Today, we remember Ronald "Ron" Schlegel, LLD '18, whose life and work left an indelible mark on countless individuals and communities across Canada.

An entrepreneur, researcher and philanthropist, Ron dedicated his life to improving the lives of others.

Through the organizations he built, the causes he championed and the research he supported, he helped advance important conversations about aging, seniors' care and mental health. His vision and generosity continue to shape health care and research for generations to come.

Ron passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at the age of 83.

McMaster University is joining communities across the country in recognizing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters on Sept. 30.

The day is an opportunity to honour survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and reflect on the role each of us can play in advancing reconciliation.

In recognition, the Survivors’ Flag will fly on McMaster’s campus.

Members of the McMaster community are encouraged to attend an event, take part in reflection, and join in this important journey of learning and reconciliation.

McMaster researcher Jon Stokes has been named one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40® — a celebration of the country’s top emerging business leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Stokes, a McMaster scientist, alumnus and founder, has earned global recognition for his work, which involves using artificial intelligence (AI) to discover new antibiotics to tackle some of the world’s most drug-resistant diseases.

In 2023, The New York Times called his work one of the most significant scientific advances of the year.

The prestigious award also recognizes his work as an entrepreneur, working to moving health discoveries out of the laboratory and into therapies to help patients around the world.

The provincial government has announced $90 million in funding for McMaster University as part of a wider investment to help prepare students for careers in in-demand sectors, such as health care and STEM.

The investment, announced today at the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI), is part of a broader $1.7 billion investment to support a total of 70,000 new postsecondary seats across the province.

The funding will help McMaster continue to give students the essential skills to enter the workforce ready to tackle real-world challenges and strengthen our economy.

“McMaster is grateful to have this opportunity to match more graduates to areas that are critical to the prosperity of Ontario and Canada,” says McMaster President and Vice-Chancellor Susan Tighe.
