Electrical Engineering began in 1958 at McMaster University and quickly grew in response to the increasing demand for high quality graduates. In 1977, and for the first time in Canada, the department started the Computer-Engineering program. In conjunction with the school of Business, the department for the first time in Canada established the Electrical Engineering and Management and Computer Eng

Meet Student Ambassador Jeryn Anthonypillai (Computer Engineering and Management & Co-op, Level 3):
What have you done and learned on your Co-op placements?
"This past summer I finished my co-op placement at CIBC as a junior developer. I was able to work on my own coding projects during the term from languages ranging from C and GoLang. I learned so much through the Co-op placement which I will take into my future career placements and I think a Co-op is a great place to expand your knowledge! I had the opportunity to learn about APIs and databases which were completely new concepts to me before entering the placement."
Do you have any tips to share with fellow students?
"Take every day as a new step and not to get overwhelmed with the amount of work that needs to be done. When looking at everything as a whole it may seem complicated but taking it one step at a time makes it much easier!"
Have you participated in any student groups/teams?
"I have led many clubs at McMaster, to name some I was the Co-Chair of MacHacks at McMaster Artificial Intelligence, and a journalist at SciSection Radio Show which airs on CFMU 93.3 FM. I'm currently the Vice President at Google Developer Student Clubs McMasterU. What I gained most from these opportunities were team collaboration skills. I have learned to work in different atmospheres and with multiple individuals trying to organize events or even create meaningful interviews about technology and the science around them."

Meet Student Ambassador Yasemin Al-Banna (Electrical & iBiomed and Co-op, Level 3) :

Do you have any tips to share for the program that you are in?
"Always go to office hours!! It helps you get to know your prof and for them to get to know you as well."

What Co-Op placements have you had?
"I was a Research Assistant in the Department of Engineering Physics, working under Dr.Fang in developing an indoor posititioning system in the Westdale Smart Home. Being my first coop experience coming out of first year, I learned a lot and got to use a lot of the theory and skills that I had learned in IBEHS 1P10.
I was also an ENG1P13 Instructional Assistant Intern (IAI). As an IAI, I had the pleasure in developing ENG1P13 for its first delivery in 2020-2021 and the amazing opportunity to teach some of the tutorials and labs throughout the academic year. I have always been passionate about teaching and looked to pursue academia post graduation so this experience has helped me gain perspective on university-level teaching and opened my eye to how much goes on in the background that students don't see! Working with such an amazing team of Instructors, IAs, IAIs and TAs, I can say that I loved every day of this Co-Op and was very saddened to have it end."

Have you participated in any student groups/teams at Mac?
"McMaster Society for Engineering Research (MacSER) - for the three years I have been part of the society I had many opportunities to network with research professors, graduate students, other undergraduate researchers and even staff in the ECCS office, which overall gave me a large network and connections! But most importantly, it gave me a chance to explore the diverse research opportunities that McMaster offers, and to help undergraduates seeking research by passing that information along through a variety of events.
I have also been a part of McMasterMakers, this club has helped me tremendously in learning so many news things like programming with OpenCV, learning the basics of HTML and CSS and even create my very own app in Flutter! As a project developer, I get to learn so many new skills in order to deliver excellent workshops to students."

What have been some of your most memorable moments at McMaster Engineering?
"My most memorable moment would have to be when my friends and I all gather up in the second floor of Thode Library at one of the round tables to study or to just chill and play games. When it was midterm season, we would spend all day in the library just doing practice questions as a huge group using the library whiteboards for our ECE courses. Those moments have to be my favorite ones!"

Meet Student Ambassador Katie DeMelo (Electrical & Biomedical, Level 3):
"The best thing I’ve done in university is get involved! I am on McMaster's women’s waterpolo team, I am a Student Ambassador for both Engineering and Women in Engineering, and I have participated in other extracurriculars like medical design team and the MES wellness committee! These opportunities have allowed me to meet so many unique individuals and really get the most out of my time at McMaster!
Tips for fellow students? Be open minded and willing to try new things. The first year of iBiomed & Engineering is meant to be open ended so you can try out new things and really dive into what streams you may be interested in. Don’t be afraid to change your mind on what stream you think you may like!
I became a Student Ambassador because I love meeting prospective students and getting to have an impact on them. I remember what it was like visiting schools in high school and how much of an impact the ambassadors made on my decision by showing what a welcoming environment Mac Eng has, and I want to be able to do the same!!"
