Dua Khan, a student in the master of science in global health program, shares her experience as the inaugural Heersink Student Mobility scholar, including how it helped her find a new perspective on research and medicine.

The Student Mobility Program builds on a broader collaboration between the University of Alabama at Birmingham and McMaster that began in March 2022.

When Dua Khan, a Master of Science in Global Health candidate at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, told family and friends that she would be spending her summer in Birmingham, Alabama, she often heard the same question: Why Alabama?

Plants and fungi are packed with molecules that could one day become new medicines, but many occur in such small quantities that studying them at scale has been nearly impossible — until now.

In a new study out of McMaster University, researchers have developed a novel chemistry technology that allows scientists to efficiently make lab-created copies of some of nature’s most sought-after molecules, a discovery that could accelerate broad drug development efforts.

Men with prostate cancer have a high risk of heart disease, especially when treated with hormone therapy.

A large international, first-of-its-kind study led by Hamilton researchers found that routine referrals to an internist or cardiologist improved cholesterol levels, but did not lead to fewer heart attacks, strokes, heart failure or cardiovascular deaths.

Read Population Health Research Institute's post "Cardiologist referrals improve cholesterol levels in prostate cancer patients, but may not be necessary for all: RADICAL PC 2" here. Edoxaban did not reduce the overall risk of stroke or systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who had previously experienced an intracranial hemorrhage, according to results of the randomized ENRICH-AF trial.

Ashkan Shoamanesh, principal investigator and professor in the Department of Medicine, explains the study’s findings and the need for an individualized decision-making approach.

Edoxaban reduced ischemic stroke after intracranial hemorrhage in patients with AF, but excess hemorrhagic stroke and major bleeding offset the benefit.

Bringing together innovators from McMaster and Hamilton Health Sciences is central to the DeGroote Heersink Hub’s goal of accelerating commercialization across Hamilton.

Through training, mentorship and access to business and industry expertise, programs like Masterclass: Foundations of Commercialization are building a pathway for prospective innovators to develop the skills and networks to move promising ideas towards commercialization.

On a Thursday afternoon in August, researchers, clinicians and engineers scattered into rooms across The Clinic at McMaster University’s DeGroote Heersink Hub with a challenge: convince the people sitting across from them that their idea mattered. Some arrived with years of research behind them. O...
