What an awesome event last Sunday planting OVER 188 PLANTS with our amazing volunteers and Trees for Hamilton!!! Outside of the carbon sink forest lies a degraded habitat, covered in a buckthorn thicket. Our volunteers helped to establish new, native plants - crowding out buckthorn, multiflora rose, and garlic mustard. Goldenrods, ferns, elderberries, and more can now be found supporting local wildlife - and they got a great helping of rain to get them started! 🌳🎉

Happy world nature conservation day! 🌎

This morning, Nature @ McMaster staff and volunteers were removing dog-strangling vine (DSV) from West Campus along Cootes Drive 🧑‍🌾

DSV is an aggressive invasive species. It can outcompete native plants for resources and impact wildlife by altering habitats and putting stress on food sources 🥀

In efforts to maintain the vernal ponds at west campus, Nature @ McMaster has been removing DSV that could potentially harm the vegetation and wildlife in the area 🪏

Happy Canada Day!

Not all Canadian species have antlers – here are just a few fun ones!

🔵Blue Jay – Clever birds that produce many different bird calls, blue jays can put on a great imitation of a red-tailed hawk!

🐸Wood Frog – These cute frogs are so interesting because they can literally freeze – they can tolerate the freezing of 60-70% of the water in their bodies!

🐉Common Green Darner – Named for their resemblance to a darning needle, the Common Green Darner is a migratory dragonfly species that lives in wetland areas. They begin their migratory path North in February, and the next generation begin their journey South in July.

This week, Nature at McMaster recognizes pollinator week!

Pollinators sustain our ecosystems by helping plants to reproduce. Birds, bats, bees, and butterflies are all types of pollinators. Due to climate change, habitat loss, and invasive species, many pollinators are at risk – let’s work to protect pollinators and the vital systems that they support!

Here are the pollinators in our photos:
- Sweat bee
- Black and yellow mud dauber
- Eastern carpenter bee
- Common eastern bumblebee
