Mohawk College is a public College of Applied Arts and Technology located in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area of Ontario, Canada. Mohawk serves more than 16,500 students and apprentices and is recognized as a leader in health, technology and skilled trades training and education. The College offers one- and two-year Ontario college diplomas, three-year Ontario college advanced diplomas, one-y

ear Ontario college graduate certificates and four-year collaborative degrees, the latter in association with McMaster University. Mohawk College is also one of the largest trainers of apprentices in Ontario, providing training to more than 4,000 apprenticeship students annually at its Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships Research, Resources and Training (STARRT) Institute in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Since its founding in 1967, over 90,000 students have graduated from Mohawk College

Mohawk College’s Engineering Technology programs span back to the 1940s when the Provincial Institute of Textiles, a predecessor to Mohawk College and located at what is now the Wentworth Campus, was founded as one of the first Ontario schools to offer specialized post-secondary training in the technical fields. A decade later, the school was restructured as the Hamilton Institute of Technology in response to the increasing need for technical education. The first class of 104 young men were offered select courses in textile, electrical, electronics and mechanical technology. While there are no more textile programs at Mohawk, the Engineering Faculty at Fennell Campus has grown to cover a wide range of disciplines, including Aviation, Biotechnology, Building and Construction Sciences, Chemical, Computer Science, Electrotechnology, Environmental, Mechanical, Transportation, and Urban Planning(1). Many of the Engineering Technology labs have recently undergone major revitalization. This includes a new and improved space for the robotics and automation lab, instrumentation lab, chemistry labs, and three research centers. These centers focus on electronic health data management, 3D printing, and energy studies. There are future plans to build more dynamic and innovative labs for collaborating with industry partners and providing opportunities for students to gain even more hands-on experience. Earlier this month, students from Mohawk’s network software program refurbished ten laptops and then traveled to Bowden Hill primary school, which is situated in a small community outside Kingston, to donate the hardware. The Mohawk students also conducted workshops on how to use the laptops being donated to Bowden Hill. The workshops focused on using the computers to improve student literacy and numeracy.
A second phase of the partnership is already in the works. Students in Mohawk’s construction program will be heading to Bowden Hill in the winter to help renovate the kitchen and build cabinetry.
