We had a fantastic time introducing engineering to high school students at the 2024 Indigenous Science Summer Camp!

Students learned about the engineering programs at TRU, job opportunities for computer and software engineers, and got a demonstration of some of our favourite robots, including the robotic dog Perro!

Over the past week high school students in Grades 10 and 11 from across Canada came to Thompson Rivers University to experience the Shad Program. Students learned from engineering faculty, worked with robotics, and got an introduction to coding.

Dr. Derek Lane-Smith founded the Shad program in 1981 in Aurora, Ontario to give students an enriching experience focused on science, technology, engineering and math. Over the last 40 years the program has continuously grown and is now offered at two dozen universities across the nation.

Staff in the Faculty of Science had a fantastic day exploring the beautiful Wells Gray Provincial Park!

We viewed a couple stunning waterfalls and were given a detailed tour by long-time professor and former Dean of Science's Tom Dickinson.

Since 1994, Thompson Rivers University has owned and operated the Wells Gray Education and Research Centre, which offers students and staff a great opportunity to do in the field research!

Today we feature one of our most outstanding alumni, Lorelei Guidos!

Lorelei was our first-ever female graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering and an exceptional student. She co-founded the TRUSU Engineering Club and won co-op student of the year in 2020, the Ken Lepin Prize of Excellence, the TRU Medal in Engineering and was valedictorian for the Faculty of Science.

Guidos completed her co-op work term with technology company Raptor Integration Inc. in her hometown of Salmon Arm, B.C. By using innovative scanning, optimization, and a variety of 3D sensor technologies, Raptor implements automation in sawmills and the wood processing industry.

The technology Raptor installs helps sawmills determine the highest grade and value of wood, resulting in more efficient operations, better yields, and more profitable operations.

Following her co-op work experience, Lorelei gained full-time employment with Raptor and has applied the knowledge she gained in her engineering degree to create innovative technology that is utilized across North America.

Did you know Software Engineering graduate Ahana Ahluwalia won the 2023 Co-Op Student of the Year Award?

Ahluwalia is recent graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering program and completed four co-op work terms at Telus Business Solutions. In her role with Telus, she worked as a software developer on a core networking DevOps team to automate, test, develop and deploy an API platform that interacts with the central database to track IP address assignments.

During her co-op's Ahluwalia built tools in the lab, testing and validating their operation and assisting with deployment to production environments. She also assisted with solutions related to network security, working closely with various partners and stakeholders on the security team.
