There was a lot more than lunch on the menu last week. 🍽️💡

Students, instructors and industry partners gathered to celebrate another year of the TRU Tourism Innovation Lab and to hear what's next for two student ventures that are moving beyond the classroom.

This summer, Ximena Aguilarcof will continue developing "Kamloops Flavours by the River", a tourism experience designed to showcase the people, places and flavours that make Kamloops unique. 🌮

Morgan Rossi will be working on "The Roaming Spa", a mobile sauna and cold plunge experience that brings wellness and connection into the outdoors. 🧖‍♀️🧖‍♂️

One of the things we love most about tourism is that great ideas can start with a conversation, a class project or a simple question: "What if?"

The Tourism Innovation Lab helps students take that next step, connecting them with mentors, industry partners and real-world support to explore what it takes to turn an idea into a business.

We're excited to see where these ventures go next.

Meet Siddharth Gupta, a 2025 graduate of TRU's Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Resort Experience Management, who went from learning the ropes at the front desk to leading the whole team.

Siddharth is now working as a Front Office Manager with Sandman Hotel Group, where he oversees daily front office operations, leads and trains his front desk team, and makes sure guests have an exceptional experience from the moment they arrive.

"I started as a Front Desk Agent, where I gained hands-on experience in guest interaction and hotel systems," he says. "Over time, I progressed into roles with more responsibility, group billing, operations coordination and that journey helped me understand both the service and financial sides of hospitality."
That foundation, he says, is what set him up for the leadership role he holds today.

For Siddharth, the tourism industry isn't just a career path, it's a lens through which he sees the world. One of his favourite destinations? Edinburgh, Scotland.

"The city's strong tourism culture and heritage make it especially interesting from a hospitality perspective. It offers both memorable guest experiences and valuable learning opportunities within the industry."

He also has a memorable adventure story of his own. On a trip to Mauritius, Siddharth decided to try scuba diving for the first time, stepping completely outside his comfort zone and discovering a whole new appreciation for adventure tourism along the way.

"Exploring the underwater world was an unforgettable experience," he says. "It gave me a deeper appreciation for how unique experiences can create lasting memories for travellers."

His advice for students considering a career in tourism?

"Start with a willingness to learn and don't be afraid of entry-level roles, they are the foundation of your growth. Consistency and dedication can help you grow quickly in this industry."

One of the most unique and exciting events on campus, the Rail Riot, was founded by valedictorian Justin Tarasoff! 🏂

Known by many as “the Rail Riot guy”, Justin is passionate about community involvement and creating spaces that bring people together. During his time at TRU, he found a strong sense of belonging and built lasting relationships through campus life and student engagement.

Alongside his academic excellence, he received the Sun Peaks Tourism & Events Award (2024) and the Peter R.B. Armstrong Award (2025) for his contributions to education and entrepreneurship in the community.

Now, working at Tourism Kamloops, he’s continuing to make an impact for both locals and visitors.

Wildfires aren't just an environmental issue. They're a human one.

TRU's Sociocultural Dynamics of Wildfire Certificate explores the side of wildfire that doesn't always make the headlines. The history of land use, Indigenous knowledge and stewardship, and what it actually takes to build resilient communities in the face of it.

TRU is accepting applications for the second cohort, so you'd be joining something still pretty new with a small group of people learning from community experts and Indigenous knowledge holders who are doing this work.

Three courses. Nine credits. A perspective on wildfire that most programs never touch.

If this sounds like the kind of work you want to be part of, it's worth checking out. 🔗 tru.ca/wildfire

Still buzzing from last week.⛺️

Big thanks to for choosing TRU, and to every industry partner, business, and outdoor enthusiast who showed up.

Events like this matter.

They’re how we keep growing this industry while building something more sustainable and regenerative for the places we love to play.

05/22/2026

For the next two days, universities and colleges from across the province are here at TRU coming together in Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary to share insights on the industry and our programs.

It’s not just an opportunity to make sure students are receiving a compatible education across institutions, it’s a chance to talk articulation. How a student can begin with a diploma at one school, continue into a degree at another, and finish with a master’s somewhere else, without losing ground along the way.

We’ve also brought our industry partners into the room. The honest conversations, the concerns, the trends, where things are actually heading, so we can build something sustainable. For our students. For our communities. For British Columbia, and globally.

Not everyone comes into Tourism Management knowing exactly where they want to end up, and honestly, that's fine.

Events, destination management, hospitality, sustainability, marketing, the options continue to grow the further you go. And the program is built that way on purpose, so you're not locked into one lane before you've had a chance to explore the industry.

If you're not sure exactly where you want to end up, that's fine. That's what the next few years are for.
