Here's a volunteer opportunity if you're looking to build your resume and gain some experience while helping refugees:

Paper Airplanes is a non-profit organization that provides free, one-on-one language and skills learning for individuals whose education has been interrupted due to conflict. We connect our students with volunteer tutors for 8 - 12 week sessions conducted through Skype, Zoom, and Hangouts. We run programs that teach English, Coding, and Turkish to Syrian refugees. In the six years since our inception, we have served more than 2,000 students with 90% of students reporting significant improvement within a semester.

We are currently looking for volunteer English tutors for our students! No previous experience tutoring is required.

Just in case anyone you know may be interested, this is a great place to start. There are some opportunities in the lower mainland as well.

Open Door Group will be hosting a virtual hiring fair April 7th & 8th to recruit for multiple positions. In addition to existing vacancies, there are two new programs. Instructor – LINC 6/7 Evening, Vancouver Location

POSITION: Instructor – LINC 6/7 Evening Replacement
DEPARTMENT: Employment, Language, & Social Enterprise Services
POSITION FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Manager and the Instructional Developer, the LINC Instructor provides administrative and student services support for the English Language Centre. The LINC Instructor’s key responsibilities include preparing curriculum materials, delivering ESL
instruction under the MOSAIC curriculum guidelines for students enrolled in the day and afternoon language programs at the MOSAIC English Language Centre. Other duties include creating a welcoming and encouraging classroom environment both in person and online as appropriate, maintaining student attendance records, planning for class field trips, guest speakers, and special events, and assessing and evaluation students using Canadian Language
Benchmark (CLB) indicators and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA).

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Undergraduate degree and a TESL Canada recognized Certificate or a clearly documented equivalent
• Minimum 2 years of experience teaching adult ESL, particularly using student-centered, participatory methods.
• Community-based, settlement and Literacy ESL experience, and online teaching experience will be considered an asset
• CLB Bootcamp certificate or equivalent training required; working knowledge of CLB and PBLA
• Strong competency in computer literacy using e-mail, word processing programs, and learner management systems
• Experience facilitating in an online environment will be considered an asset
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Highly organized, tactful, versatile, and flexible; sensitive to and understanding of the needs of adult immigrant learners; attitudes and values in keeping with the goals and philosophies of MOSAIC.
• Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check required

HOURS: Part-time (14 hrs per week)
STARTING PAY: $28.47 to $30.14 hourly rate, Based on experience and qualifications
