Academia, industry, entrepreneurship, and different roles inside each. What's actually on your radar right now, and where did those ideas come from? We'll work through a structured reflection on your experiences, strengths, interests, and the influences that shape what you want.

In this hour we will cover:

• The real landscape of graduate career paths against what you had assumed your options were
• A skills audit that translates academic work into language employers use
• A guided reflection on the moments that have energized you, and what they have in common
• A short values exercise to clarify what you're actually optimizing for
• An accomplishment-tracking tool that you can keep working through afterwards
Open to master's and doctoral students in any discipline, at any stage.

Are you interested in learning more about how copyright applies to you as a researcher? If so, this workshop is for you!

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

Understand the basics of copyright law and how it applies to articles and other works you hope to publish

Seek and obtain permission from copyright owners when needed

Use fair dealing and other exceptions to copy and share other people’s works for your publications

Understand your choices for cIRcle, UBC’s institutional repository, and select a suitable open access license for your work

Publish your thesis in a journal or book, and negotiate your publishing contract, and ensure that articles you have previously published are eligible for inclusion within future works you are planning to publish.

The workshop will be presented by a copyright librarian, who will provide you with practical tips and resources for your publishing journey. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. If you have detailed questions, you can book a follow-up, one-on-one appointment with the copyright librarian. This workshop is suitable for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty.

We're excited to announce the next Starting the Conversation with Leonie Steigenberger who will present on the Economic Valuation of Cultus Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm.

Key words: Lake Health, Investment Decision Making, Community Based Research

Abstract: Cultus Lake is a popular recreational destination in the lower mainland. However, climate change and nutrient loading are threatening the health of the lake’s ecosystem. Our study uses a combined travel cost and contingent behavior approach to establish a monetary representation of what would be lost if the health of the lake declines. Data was collected by surveying visitors during the 2026 summer season. Our research partner, the Cultus Lake Stewardship Society, and local government will use the results of our study to support investment decision-making.


Bio: Leonie is an MSc student studying environmental economics through an interdisciplinary lens. She completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University, in natural resource science. Leonie is particularly drawn to work at the intersection of economics, science, and policy. Leonie is a recipient of the 2026 ICER Student Community Engaged Research Award.

Felisha Anderson is a Master of Arts student in Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies in the theme of Power, Conflict, and Ideas, supervised by Dr. Jodey Castricano. Felisha’s research analyzes how “humane” discourse and the disingenuous marketing and promotion of “happy” animal “products” circumvents fundamental change by providing bad faith rationales, reassurances, and justifications to continue the exploitation, violence, and killing of farmed animals. Felisha challenges the notion that animals are mere resources, calls for the total abolition of animal use, and advocates for a paradigm shift in our relation to other animals.

Congratulations to the 2026/2027 winners of the Public Scholars Initiative!

Our next featured winner is Jacqueline Tams. Jacqueline is in the Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology program. Jacqueline is in the early stages of designing a community-based participatory action research project alongside a local organization that serves adolescents experiencing problematic substance use and their families. They want to understand what successful recovery means to youth, recognizing that research increasingly shows that young people can have multi-dimensional understandings of what recovery looks like.

Eager to learn more about teaching, and how she could be a better teacher for her students, Michelle Scranton decided to pursue her Master of Education. For her capstone project, she decided to dive deeper into something she’d experienced firsthand, incivility and bullying in nursing.
