If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice before starting graduate school, what would it be?

We asked current and former graduate students to share the tips, lessons, and reminders that helped them succeed, and we're bringing their answers to you weekly throughout September.

From managing expectations to building connections and finding balance, you'll hear real experiences from people who've walked the path before you.

Follow along for practical advice from the grad student community.

Effective September 1, 2026, the minimum funding for PhD students will increase to $40,000 per year for the first four years of a PhD program. All full-time current and incoming UBC PhD students are eligible for the minimum funding package.

The minimum funding package can be comprised of scholarships, such as the Okanagan Graduate Research Scholarship, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and some forms of employment. For full details of the funding sources that contribute to the minimum funding package, please visit gradstudies.ok.ubc.ca/minimum-funding-policy

The College of Graduate Studies has been working closely with graduate programs to ensure that all eligible students receive the new minimum funding amount. If you have not already received a communication from your program regarding your funding package for the 2026/2027 academic year, please expect communication by the beginning of September. If you do not receive information about your funding package by that date, please reach out to your graduate program coordinator directly.
