Introducing SCIVERSIFY UBCO!

Recognizing an ongoing lack of diversity within the field of science, Sciversify UBCO is a new, student-led initiative aimed at sparking a discussion around equity and diversity in STEM. This 3-day conference will be delivered via Zoom in the evenings from September 21-23, and features speaking engagements from several incredible scientists as well as a workshop delivered by UBCO’s Equity and Inclusion Office; find the event schedule below. Event attendees will also be eligible to win prizes from locally-owned businesses, so don't miss out!

The Nobel prize in chemistry has been awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna for their work in the development of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing. Congratulations!

The 2020 Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded for research into "rewriting the code of life." Emmanuelle Charpentier of France and Jennifer Doudna of the U.S. are the laureates.

The New York Times has a great profile on Dr. Maureen Raymo - one of the worlds leading oceanographers and climate scientists and interim director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

In addition to being one of the most influential earth scientists of her generation, Dr. Raymo is passionate about promoting diversity and equity within the field of ocean, atmosphere and earth sciences.

"While women have made great strides, people of color are still a tiny part of the fields of ocean, atmosphere and earth sciences: In 2016, 85 percent of all geoscience Ph.D.s went to whites, a percentage remarkably consistent over the past 40 years[...]A bit more than half of the program’s graduate students are male and 64 percent are white. There are currently no Black members of the faculty."

“[Dr. Raymo] has been one of the few people to ask proactively what can be done [...] to change the foundation of what we do, and how we do it.”
