We're excited to announce the next Starting the Conversation with Leonie Steigenberger who will present on the Economic Valuation of Cultus Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm.

Key words: Lake Health, Investment Decision Making, Community Based Research

Abstract: Cultus Lake is a popular recreational destination in the lower mainland. However, climate change and nutrient loading are threatening the health of the lake’s ecosystem. Our study uses a combined travel cost and contingent behavior approach to establish a monetary representation of what would be lost if the health of the lake declines. Data was collected by surveying visitors during the 2026 summer season. Our research partner, the Cultus Lake Stewardship Society, and local government will use the results of our study to support investment decision-making.

Bio: Leonie is an MSc student studying environmental economics through an interdisciplinary lens. She completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University, in natural resource science. Leonie is particularly drawn to work at the intersection of economics, science, and policy. Leonie is a recipient of the 2026 ICER Student Community Engaged Research Award.

This will be a hybrid event.

🧡 September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the ongoing impacts of the residential school system.

As we approach September 30, there are many meaningful ways to observe the day. Whether through learning, listening, remembering, supporting Indigenous voices, or taking action, each of us has a role in carrying truth and reconciliation forward.

We invite you to take time to reflect, learn, and honour this important day with care and intention. 🧡

What happens to anthropology when the archives disappear?

Fieldnotes, photographs, recordings, datasets, correspondence — anthropologists produce far more than what gets published. And as digital formats multiply and preservation challenges grow, the question of what gets kept, who controls access, and how it survives is more urgent than ever.

Join us on September 23 at 2 PM ET for What Will Remain: Archiving Anthropology for the Future, a webinar bringing together three leading voices in anthropological archiving to tackle the practical and ethical realities of preserving our discipline's knowledge for future generations.
