Queen's School of Nursing is hosting international guest scholar Dr. Molalign B. Adugna for an Academic Series lecture on Sept. 8. Dr. Adugna is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia.

"Between Kingston and Gondar: Rethinking Health Equity, Disability, and Rehabilitation Through an Ethiopian Lens" Tuesday, September 8 at 11 am ET. Register to attend virtually.

Dr. Adugna's research and community development work focuses on disability inclusion, inclusive higher education, community-based rehabilitation, stigma reduction, and inclusive development. His work has been presented on international platforms, including at the 2024 Social Forum at United Nations Headquarters. He has also presented at various Mastercard Foundation conferences, as well as the Pan-African Transformational Leadership Summit, sharing insights on disability inclusion, inclusive leadership, youth empowerment, and transformative community development.

Remember your first week of classes? Who did you become 'instant friends' with? How did you remember everyone's names? Did you get lost more than once? 🥹

It's been an exciting first week for the 2030 Queen's MD class that began their Orientation activities by reciting the Hippocratic Oath, receiving their first stethoscope, attending many social events, and receiving their new backpacks from the Ontario Medical Association. Now they get to work!

Wishing the 2030 class all the best as they start their MD journey -- good luck remembering all those names!

A week of firsts and milestones for the fourth cohort of the Queen's-Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program. They started their MD journey this week through orientation activities and onboarding, including a special ceremony reciting the physician's oath, affirming their commitment to the principles and responsibilities that will guide them throughout their careers.

The moment is especially meaningful in a program centred on comprehensive, community-focused family medicine. Over the next four years, these students will learn alongside physicians, educators, interprofessional teams and communities across Durham Region and putting those commitments into practice through their learning and relationships with patients.

We are proud to welcome these new aspiring family physicians and wish them all the best as they begin their journey into family medicine.

Congratulations to Dr. Heidi Cramm who has been elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in recognition of her research on the mental health and well-being of veteran, military, first responder, and public safety families.

Election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences is one of the country's highest distinctions in health sciences that recognizes peer-nominated leaders for outstanding contributions to the health of Canadians through research, healthcare, and leadership.

The Aging in Community Partnership co-led by Queen’s researchers Catherine Donnelly and Vincent DePaul (Rehabilitation Therapy) and Carri Hand (Western University) have been awarded $2.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to further expand the national network of Oasis Communities for Aging Well.

Oasis Communities are designed by older adults and operate within 'naturally occurring retirement communities' like apartment buildings, established neighborhoods and small communities across Canada. They help older adults connect with each other through activities and healthy living so they can stay well and age well at home as long as possible.

New research from Dr. Kerstin de Wit recently published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that high levels of burnout are contributing to 1 in 10 emergency department physicians leaving the profession, with others reducing the number of shifts they work.

For millions of Canadians living with asthma or chronic lung disease, inhalers are a part of life. What many may not consider is the environmental footprint of these devices, specifically their carbon emissions which are surprisingly high.

New research from Anthony Train, Queen's Family Medicine, shows that prescriptions for the higher-emission devices in Ontario greatly outweigh those for lower-emission treatments.

"The findings suggest there is significant room for improvement in Canada," says Dr. Train. "Many of the countries we compare ourselves to have been more successful in reducing their reliance on metered-dose inhalers, showing that it is possible to shift toward lower-emission alternatives."

Dr. Mary Ann McColl's research identifies ten stories older adults tell again and again, and when we listen beyond the details we uncover the values and deeper meaning behind them.
