Thursday, July 17th 12:00pm โ€“ 4:00pm at Modern Fuel โญ๏ธ

Modern Fuel is partnering with for the research-creation workshop series, Surveillant Pleasures. Surveillant Pleasures brings together an interdisciplinary constellation of 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled, classed, and gendered artists, curators, and scholars in so-called Canada to engage with theories of both pleasure and surveillanceโ€”in particular, exploring how using surveillance technologies and practices in relation to โ€œpleasure activismโ€ may create forms of healing, care, and radical empowerment (brown 2019).

Participants interested in participating in the research component of the workshop may answer three questions about their experience using the equipment, their artwork, and the workshop, that may be video/audio recorded or written. Those who take part in the research component of the workshop will receive a $100 Visa gift card as part of their participation. Furthermore, these participants may be invited to submit their artwork created during the workshop as part of a zine to be created by the workshop leaders.

Registration and participation in this research-creation project is limited and prioritizes equity deserving artists. The deadline to register is July 10th.

๐Ÿšจ CUST students! Have you heard about the Mutual Aid Gardens at Queens? ๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿฅ” Check out all the events and programming below.

๐Ÿฅ• Stay tuned in the coming weeks - Society of Graduate & Professional Students at Queen's will be announcing the first Free Veggie Market shortly! ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Mutual Aid Gardens invites SGPS members to participate in growing, caring for, harvesting, sharing, and eating fresh veggies! As more and more of us are increasingly impacted by food insecurity, we know we need each other to feed each other. Whether youโ€™d like to get your hands dirty, can offer rides to and from gardens or free veggie markets, or would like access to FREE and fresh veggies, we encourage you to please get in touch and support your local autonomous garden network :) All are welcome regardless of knowledge or experience.

Our first Free Veggie Market will take place in July, but until then, we're looking for support with garden care. Reach out on Instagram or email us at [email protected] - we'll invite you to join our Whatsapp group for easier coordination. Thanks, and hope to garden with you soon!

๐ŸŽญ Hanan Zeineldin is a recent graduate of the Cultural Studies MA program, as well as an accomplished Egyptian multimedia artist, actor, and filmmaker, boasting over 15 years of expertise in the dynamic realm of art and culture. Her journey began with a dedication to performance and directing studies, both in her native Egypt and the United States. She has a distinguished background in theatre, film, and television.
In 2022, Hanan made a debut as a director with the thought-provoking short film ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™๐™–๐™ก๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ, tackling the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human lives. This marked a pivotal moment in her artistic career as she seamlessly transitioned into the directorial sphere, bringing her unique perspective to pressing societal issues.

๐ŸŽ“ Hanan is the holder of two Master of Arts degrees, each a testament to her commitment to continuous learning and exploration. Her first MA, in Educational Multimedia from California State Polytechnic University (2015), resulted in the creation of an interactive e-book, Further enriching her academic and artistic journey, Hanan earned her second MA in Cultural Studies from Queenโ€™s University in 2023. Her graduation project, the autobiographical experimental documentary short film ๐™ˆ๐™ฎ ๐™ƒ๐™ž๐™™๐™™๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™๐™ง๐™š๐™š, not only showcased her artistic finesse but also garnered acclaim, earning the Graduate Fellowship Award from the Cultural Studies program ๐Ÿ†.

๐™‡๐™–๐™ฌ๐™ง๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š ๐™๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง, Hananโ€™s third film, continues her exploration of deeply human narratives. The documentary received grants, from Canada Council for Arts and Keys organization for new immigration. The film premiered at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival (KCFF), and achieved three sold-out screeningsโ€”highlighting both its critical and audience success. The short film is a documentary taking place in Kingston about Iraqi refugee Hisham, wheelchair-bound from war injuries, discovers a talent for string art while adapting to a new life with his three children. Amidst cultural challenges, he finds unexpected love and support from Manal, a Saudi Arabian scholar.

๐Ÿ‘ Huge congratulations to Hanan on all of the success of her most recent film, and all her future successes!! ๐ŸŽฌ
