From Farm Fields to Global Leadership: The Remarkable Journey of Colonel (Ret'd) Brian Akitt, RRMC/RMC 1974

From a farm in small-town Ontario to leadership roles across Canada and around the world, Brian Akitt's journey is a remarkable example of where determination, education, and service can lead.

When Brian accepted an offer to attend Royal Roads Military College in 1970, he could not have known that the experience would launch a career spanning more than three decades in the Royal Canadian Air Force. What he did know was that he was being given an opportunity to challenge himself, broaden his horizons, and serve something larger than himself.

That opportunity grew into a distinguished military career that included commanding Canada's Sea King helicopter community, representing Canada internationally, and serving in multinational leadership roles supporting global security and cooperation.

One of the most impactful chapters of his career came in the Sinai Peninsula, where Brian served as Chief of Liaison for the Multinational Force and Observers while commanding the Canadian Contingent. Working alongside military personnel from around the world, he helped facilitate communication and cooperation between Egypt and Israel in support of a historic peace agreement. It was leadership, diplomacy, and service at the highest level.

After retiring from military service, Brian continued to make a difference as a senior executive with General Dynamics Canada and later as President of CANAVAIR Associates Inc., bringing the same dedication and leadership that had defined his military career.

Brian's story reminds us that leadership is not about where you start. It is about the choices you make, the values you uphold, and the impact you leave on others.
From Officer Cadet to Commander. From international peace operations to executive leadership. From opportunity to legacy.

His journey continues to inspire generations of alumni and Officer Cadets who strive to lead with purpose, integrity, and service.

Truth. Duty. Valour.

Thank you for your service and leadership, Brian.

🌎 From Kingston to Manila!

Officer Cadet Donovan Dobson recently completed a five-week placement at the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines as part of the inaugural Defence Diplomacy On-the-Job Experience program. The opportunity gave him a unique look at how military relationships help strengthen Canada's partnerships around the world.

“I was eager to apply because I saw it as a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience while living and working in another country.”

Reflecting on the experience, Dobson noted:

“The biggest surprise for me was seeing the direct impact the Defence Team has on international relations.”

Experiences like these help prepare the next generation of Canadian Armed Forces leaders to succeed in a world where diplomacy, partnership, and military cooperation go hand in hand.

After weeks of preparation, RMC Saint-Jean Naval and Officer Cadets put their endurance, determination, and teamwork to the test during the traditional Obstacle Course, before marking an important milestone in their journey at the Badging Parade.

Throughout every stage, participants pushed their limits, demonstrated courage, and showed exceptional teamwork. Whether overcoming physical challenges, persevering through fatigue, or encouraging one another along the way, each team met the challenge with resilience and pride.

Congratulations to all Naval and Officer Cadets who took part in this demanding and rewarding tradition. Your commitment, teamwork, and determination reflect the spirit of RMC Saint-Jean and the values you continue to build as future leaders.
