The Department of Art History and Art Conservation at Queen's University is very excited to announce the search for our first-ever Bader Chair in Art Conservation. This new tenure or tenure-track faculty position, made possible through the generous support of Isabel Bader, will be a distinguished academic or an exceptionally promising emerging scholar with expertise in advanced analytical imaging. The appointee will help establish advanced imaging as a new stream within the Art Conservation program, while developing new courses, mentoring graduate students, and leading major research initiatives in the science of diagnostic and analytical imaging.

Here's a fantastic article on a recent exhibition curated by Queen's Art History Professor Gauvin Bailey. Opening at the Museo de Artes at the Universidad de los Andes in Santiago, Chile, the exhibition focuses on the Holtz-Khani Collection of wooden carved polychrome sculptures from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The Graduate Visual Culture Association's (GVCA) annual graduate conference, "Context and Meaning" is scheduled for Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23. We are very excited to welcome Dr. Alison Matthews David from Ryerson University to give the keynote lecture. This year's conference (which will be in entirely remote) is focusing on "Art and Crime". Carlo Corsato and Daniel Maze have organized a Zoom celebration in honour of the late Allison Sherman, who taught in the Department of Art History and Art Conservation until her untimely passing in 2017. The celebration will honour Allison, and the book launch of her dissertation, The Lost Venetian Church of Santa Maria Assunta dei Crociferi. Form, Decoration, Patronage.

Congratulations to MA student, Nuard Tadevosyan, on winning the 2020 Mavis Batey Essay Prize, offered through the Gardens Trust (UK). She was awarded this international essay prize for her essay, "Della Robbia Green: From Sublime to Sinister", and it will be published later in the peer-reviewed academic journal Garden History. As part of her innovative research into medical humanities and art history, Dr. Allison Morehead recently completed an interdisciplinary research workshop, “Doing Medical Humanities with Art, Non-Art Objects, and Things,” in Oslo, Norway, with the participation of three PhD students from Art History at Queen’s. Here, PhD student Hannah Darvin is handling an object from the University of Oslo collection, while Marla Dobson, a graduate of Queen’s PhD program and now curator of the Museum of Health Care in Kingston, looks on.
