Humans of Homecoming

“We just laughed and laughed.”

Jim Rose, Artsci’70, Ed’71, and Joan Rose, Artsci’69, Ed’70, first met at a party in Morris Hall nearly 60 years ago.

Their first date took them to Grant Hall for a performance of The Pirates of Penzance. It was, by their own admission, a flop — until a spontaneous game of ping-pong afterward turned an awkward evening into one filled with laughter.

Soon, they were exchanging letters every day. The laughter became love, and in 1969, they were married.

“We’ve been in Kingston ever since,” says Jim. “And it all started right here.”

Queen's University alumni have been part of the QUAA for 100 years, and many grads don’t realize they’re already members.

The association brings together more than 185,000 alumni in over 150 countries and helps grads stay connected through events, mentoring, reunions, branches, chapters, awards, and volunteer roles. It also supports alumni through networks, recognition programs, and community initiatives that have grown over a century.

Humans of Homecoming

“We missed our 50th because of COVID, so we said, ‘See you in 2025, if we make it!’”

The first and only other time Joe Smillie, Artsci’70, Ed’71 — aptly pronounced “smiley” — attended was for his 45th reunion.

Ten years later, he travelled from his home in Vermont to celebrate his 55th and reconnect with everything he loves about the weekend.

“The parade. Seeing everybody. Queen’s Bands. And the football game, which we better win — we’re playing the Lancers!”

The game didn’t quite go Joe’s way. The rest of the weekend, though? Plenty to smile about.

One of the most memorable moments at the first Black at Queen’s Post Grad event in Toronto happened around a couch.

Mona Walrond, MEd’77, Ed’78, shared stories from her time at Queen's University with younger alumni and current students. When she mentioned she wasn’t on LinkedIn but wanted to stay in touch, organizer Ruth Osunde, Artsci’26, encouraged attendees to share their contact information. Within minutes, a lineup formed.

The event brought together about 100 Black alumni and students for an evening of connection, storytelling, and community building.

Homecoming 100 is taking shape behind the scenes as Queen's University prepares for Oct. 16–18. 🇷🇴

Across campus and beyond, students, staff, volunteers, and alumni are building a weekend that reflects a century of traditions and the ways continues to evolve.

Queen’s Bands are preparing new performances, teams are developing experiences that help alumni reconnect with campus, and more than 70 reunions are in progress. The program includes campus tours, Fall Harvest, branch events worldwide, and opportunities to engage with Queen’s research, athletics, and community.

Humans of Homecoming

“When he came two years ago, I made him promise that he had to come with me for my 30th!”

Marcos Otazo, Sc’93, kept his promise.

After returning for his own 30th reunion two years earlier, he joined his sister, Marcia Otazo, Com’95, to celebrate hers.

Now living in the U.S., the siblings spent exploring campus together and taking in what had changed, as well as what still felt familiar.

“Queen’s and Kingston were huge parts of my life,” says Marcia. “They shaped who I am.”

Ten years ago, The Tragically Hip played their final concert, broadcast from Kingston to millions across Canada. But long before they filled arenas, they were Kingston’s band, with deep roots at Queen's University.

This summer, alumni returned to campus to revisit the places where the Hip first built their following, from Clark Hall Pub to Grant Hall. Kingston marked the anniversary with concerts, tours, tributes, and a rebroadcast of the band’s final show from Aug. 20–22. And this fall, Hip songs will take the stage again in a new musical at the Grand Theatre.

For many alumni, it’s a chance to remember when seeing The Hip play local bars and campus venues was simply part of being at Queen’s.

When Sc’70 invited Sc’90 to join their class fund and support the Queen's Rocket Engineering Team, both classes saw a natural match. Engineering design teams had shaped their own student years, and QRET’s passion made the collaboration even more meaningful.

At Homecoming 2025, the partnership became official, surpassing fundraising goals and creating long‑term support for QRET.
