During the first week of November in Ontario, we celebrate to raise awareness and understanding of treaties between Indigenous peoples and the Crown. The first of the post-Confederation "Numbered Treaties" is Treaty No. 1, and was signed on August 3, 1871, between the Anishinaabe and Swampy Cree First Nations and the Crown.
The Two Row Wampum, known as Teiohate Kaswenta in the Mohawk language, represents an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Europeans, and symbolizes 'two separate paths traveling side-by-side down the "river of life" without interfering with each other'.
the land Conestoga's Brantford, Kitchener - Doon, Waterloo and Cambridge campuses are located on is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral peoples?
As we celebrate Treaties Recognition Week, we encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the importance of treaties and their role in shaping our shared history: https://ow.ly/a57v50XksVw
